Gustavus Wins Ninth Consecutive MIAC
Women’s Tennis Championship

(St. Peter, Minn. - Saturday, May 6, 2000) -- The Gustavus women’s tennis team won five of six singles titles and all three doubles titles to claim their ninth consecutive MIAC title and 11th in the past 12 years. The Gusties totalled 170 points followed by St. Olaf with 127, and St. Thomas with 124 to round out the top three. Gustavus will now advance to the NCAA Tournament where they will host the Midwest Regional next Friday and Saturday, May 12-13.
The Gusties crowned five singles champions including Meghan Donley (SR, Duluth, Minn./East) at #1, Ellen Anderson (SO, Edina, Minn.) at #2, Erica Hanson (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo) at #3, Laura Beduhn (SO, St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) at #4, and Kristin Donley (SO, Duluth, Minn./East) at #6. Claire Adamsick (Minneapolis, Minn.), a senior from St. Olaf claimed the #5 singles title. In the doubles draw, Gustavus claimed all three titles as sisters Meghan and Kristin Donley won at #1, Ellen Anderson and Laura Beduhn won at #2 and Erica Hanson and Kara Jorgenson (SR, Billings, Montana) won at #3.
St. Thomas made a strong bid to overtake St. Olaf for second place but came up three points short, 127-124. The Oles knocked off the Tommies in their dual match in the regular season and thus had a ten point advantage heading into the conference tournament (Each team receives 10 points for a dual match win during the regular season and then adds those points to the points earned in the tournament to determine the final order of finish). St. Thomas outscored St. Olaf 44-38 at the tournament, but could not make up the ten point deficit from the dual meet loss.
Gustavus Head Coach Jon Carlson was named the MIAC Coach of the Year and Gustavus senior Erica Hanson was named the Chris Evert Award winner. The Evert Award, which is selected by the coaches, is given to a senior tennis player who combines outstanding tennis ability with academics, sportsmanship and civic involvement.
