Gustavus 8, Luther 1
NCAA Midwest Sub-Region Final

[Saturday, May 13, 2000]

The Gustavus women's tennis team won the Midwest Sub-Region final and advanced to the NCAA Team Championship Finals with a convincing 8-1 win over Luther College. The match was played indoors in the Swanson Tennis Center on the Gustavus campus due to strong winds and cool temperatures outside. The Gusties took a 2-1 lead after doubles play as Meghan and Kristin Donley won at #1 and Ellen Anderson and Laura Beduhn won at #2. The Norse picked up their only victory of the match at #3 where Julie Perrault and Heidi Hingeveld defeated Erica Hanson and Kara Jorgenson, 8-3. Gustavus pulled away during the singles competition winning all six matches and dropping only one set in the process.

The Gusties will be playing in the NCAA Team Championship Final for the 12th consecutive time, however this year is even more special because Gustavus will serve as the host for the first time in the school's history. Eight teams will arrive in St. Peter on Thursday, May 18 and the NCAA Division III Team Championship will be contested May 19-21. Gustavus enters the NCAA Championships with an overall mark of 28-4. Coach Jon Carlson's squad is 20-2 against Division III competition, 3-2 against Division I opponents and 5-0 against Division II competition.
