Gustavus Wins Second Straight MIAC Championship

(St. Cloud, Minn., February 16, 2003) - The Gustavus women’s nordic skiing team claimed its second consecutive conference crown at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships. The championships were held on the Graystone Trails in St. Cloud on Saturday, February 15 and Sunday, February 16.

The Gusties earned first place finishes in Saturday's 5K freestyle race as well as Sunday's 10K classical race. Gustavus finished with a combined total of 79 team points, 14 points ahead of second-place St. Olaf. Britta Carlson (SR, Jericho, VT) placed first overall in the freestyle competition with a time of 17:10 while Ingrid Olson (JR, White Bear Lake) won the classical contest with a time of 43:39. It is the first time that Gustavus has had an individual champion in either event.

Gustavus put itself into excellent position heading into the final day of competition after winning the freestyle race with 39 team points, four points in front of St. Olaf. In addition to having the individual champion, the Gusties had two of the other top five finishers. Melissa Kittock (FY, Buffalo, MN) placed third overall with a time of 17:40. Olson was clocked at 17:44, which was the fifth fastest time. Carlson, Kittock, and Olson each earned all-conference honors in the freestyle race.

The Gusties sealed the conference title by an equally impressive performance in Sunday's 10K classical race. Gustavus finished with 40 points, ten points in front of St. Olaf. Olson took top honors individually while Kittock came in second and Kelly Damrow (SO, Roseville, MN) finished fifth. All three Gusties earned all-conference honors in the classical race.

The team conference championship is based on team results from the freestyle and classical races. The top three finishers from each school contribute to the team’s score on each day. The team with the highest combined point total after the two-day championships wins the conference title. Gustavus has now won two of the four MIAC championships since nordic skiing became a conference sport in the 1999-2000 season.

Gustavus returns to action next Saturday at the CCSA Regional Championships at Biwabik, Minnesota. The freestyle race will take place on Saturday while the classical race will be held on Sunday.
