Women's Soccer 1998 Archive
Overall: 13-6-1
MIAC: 7-2-1 (3rd place)
At first look, the Gusties final regular season mark of 12-5-1 would make the casual observer think that is was a good, but not great season for Head Coach Mike Stehlik and his squad. However, a closer look reveals that all five of the regular season defeats came at the hands of squads ranked in the top twenty nationally and four of the five losses were by one goal.
In conference play the Gusties compiled a record of 7-2-1 and finished in third place. The team received its sixth consecutive NCAA National Tournament bid and picked up a first round win over St. Thomas before being eliminated by eventual national champion Macalester 1-0 in two overtimes.
First year standout Michelle Kurtz led the team in scoring with seven goals and seven assists for 21 points. Four players were named first team all-conference including senior midfielder Molly MacLeod-Roth, junior midfielder Katie Ryerse, junior defender Mercede Kortus and first year forward Michelle Kurtz. MacLeod-Roth and Ryerse were also named to the All-Central Region team.
