Schoenrock, Vrieze Earn MIAC Elite 22 Awards

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) recognized some of its best and brightest winter sport student-athletes on Thursday with the announcement of the Elite 22 Awards. Two Gustavus student-athletes received the award as Betsy Schoenrock (Jr., New Richland) is the women’s basketball recipient and Kayla Vrieze (Sr., Eagan) is the women’s hockey recipient.

Women’s Basketball Comeback Falls Short at Simpson 73-67

Trailing by 19 points with 8:24 left in the game, the Gustavus women's basketball team could have taken the easy way out, packed it in, and accepted defeat. Instead, the Gusties battled all the way to the bitter end, cutting the deficit to four points twice in the final minute, but eventually fell to host Simpson 73-67 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) released its women's basketball postseason awards Tuesday and four Gusties received recognition. Emma Kniefel (So., Medford) and Anna Sanders (Jr., Vadnais Heights) have been named All-Conference, while Kylie Baranick (Fy., Maple Grove) and Rachel Kawiecki (Fy., Richfield) have been named to the All-First Year Team.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) on Monday afternoon announced the 64-team field for its Division III Women’s Basketball Championship and Gustavus (22-4) is selected to face No. 5-ranked Simpson (25-1) in the first round on Friday, March 4, hosted by Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.

Women’s Basketball Wins MIAC Playoff Title 65-56 at Augsburg

For the first time in program history, Gustavus women's basketball is the champion of the MIAC postseason tournament. The Gusties, now 22-4 overall, defeated MIAC regular season champion Augsburg 65-56 on Sunday afternoon, punching their ticket to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Women’s Hoops Controls Bethel Start to Finish, Advances to MIAC Championship

The Gustavus women's basketball team had one of its most dominating performances of the season Friday night, defeating Bethel 74-40 in the MIAC semifinals. The Gusties, now 21-4 overall, advance to their sixth MIAC playoff championship game in program history where they will travel to top-seeded Augsburg (21-5) for a 2 p.m. Sunday tipoff in Minneapolis.

The Gustavus women's basketball team Wednesday took an early lead against Concordia in the MIAC playoff quarterfinals and never looked back in a 53-41 victory. The Gusties, now 20-4 overall, will host Bethel in the MIAC semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday.
