Distance - Cross Country and Track and Field
Where did you go to high school?: Mankato East High School
Where is your hometown?: Mankato, MN
Tell me about your family (siblings, are any of your family members current/previous Gusties?): I am a triplet, and my brother, sister, and I have two older half-brothers. My brother is going to be a radiology technician and my sister will be an elementary school teacher.
Tell me about your experiences so far at Gustavus: My experiences at Gustavus have summed up to be the best years of my life. I've met many amazing people and broadened my worldview and sense of self in the process.
What volunteering or community service have you done in and/or out of college?: I have been a small group leader at Crossview Covenant Church in North Mankato every year that I've been at college. For my classes, I have participated in Study Buddies at St. Peter High School. This year I volunteered for STRIDE, a running and character-building program for 3rd-6th grade boys.
What other extracurricular activities, clubs, or organizations are you a part of?: I am in Proclaim, Handbells, and SAAC.
How have these activities changed your time at Gustavus?: They've allowed me to meet a ton of really great people that I wouldn't have known otherwise. They have also diversified my weeks, making each day interesting and exciting.
Have you been a part of any movements that work for social justice or change? What are you passionate about?: I have not been a part of any movements for social justice or change. My passions mostly involve working with younger people. I've found that I thrive off of the energy that youth bring and that I will go to great lengths to help them to channel that energy into bettering themselves and the world around them.
Tell me about any high school athletic and academic achievements or awards that you have earned: Here is my list: Best Attitude Award (Cross Country) 2014 and 2015, Most Valuable (Cross Country) 2016, Most Valuable Distance (Track and Field) 2017, Captain (Cross Country) 2015 and 2016, Triple A Award 2017
Tell me about your college academic and athletic achievements that you have earned . (Captain, All-American, all-conference, academic all-conference, etc, and include year): I was captain (Cross Country) 2019, Leadership Team Member (Cross Country) 2020, Academic All-Conference (Cross Country) 2018 and 2019(?).
Why did you choose Gustavus?: Meeting Brenden Huber was what started the ball rolling for my decision to come to Gustavus. I came to the Gustavus Running Camp the summer before my senior year not intending to run in college, but after a few days there, I found that I wanted to run, and I wanted to run at Gustavus. Coaches Brendo and Dale were people that I immediately felt comfortable with, and the more that I looked into the college, the more I knew it was the right place to go. Of all of the colleges I visited, none came close.
In your opinion what makes the Gustavus cross country/track and field programs different from other colleges?: When I have talked with people who participate in cross country or track and field at other colleges, I am surprised at how they talk about their experiences. When I talk to my fellow Gusties, it seems like we live and breathe our sport. Not even necessarily our sport, but our coaches, teammates, and the experiences that our sport has given us. It feels like we are so enmeshed in our lives together as athletes that we don't even realize how close it has made us. I do not find this in most of the stories that I hear from people in sports elsewhere.
