Bryce Knutson

Year Jr.
Hometown Owatonna, Minn.
High School Owatonna

Year at Gustavus: Junior
What events are you in? Are you in both cross country and track and field?: I run both cross country and track. I compete in the 3k and 5k indoors, and the 5k and 10k outdoors.
Where did you go to high school?: Owatonna High School
Where is your hometown?: Owatonna, MN
Tell me about your family (siblings, are any of your family members current/previous Gusties?): I have an older sister, Payton, who teaches 8th grade math at Rosemount Middle School and a younger brother, Eli, who is a junior in high school. My parents, Mark and Amy,, both work at an insurance company in Owatonna, and my dad, a Gustie grad, is the co-owner of a microbrewery!
Tell me about your experiences so far at Gustavus: Gustavus has been everything I could’ve ever hoped for in a college. The academic rigor has been challenging, but yet quite intellectually stimulating. In my time here I’ve met some of my best friends and made some pretty unforgettable memories. I have definitely found a home on this team and at this school.
What volunteering or community service have you done in and/or out of college?: I’ve helped out with Special Olympics events at Gustavus and the semiannual highway cleanup through Society of Physics Students.
What other extracurricular activities, clubs, or organizations are you a part of?: I have been a part of the Gustavus Choir, Society of Physics Students, and Social Justice Choir.
How have these activities changed your time at Gustavus?: These activities, in hand with running, have been my life at Gustavus and I couldn’t be more thankful for each of them. They have made these last two and a half years the best of my life and have been my outlet when school gets overwhelming.
Have you been a part of any movements that work for social justice or change? What are you passionate about?: Yeah! I was blessed to be able to sing in the Social Justice Choir for the Nobel Conference this year and hope to do so next year as well. I am passionate about music and using music to reach people of all backgrounds. I am also passionate about environmental sustainability and preserving and protecting our beautiful world.
Newspaper: If you would like press releases involving you sent to any hometown newspapers, please list them here: Owatonna People’s Press
Tell me about any high school athletic and academic achievements or awards that you have earned: I received the most Improved Runner in Cross Country 2019 season.
Why did you choose Gustavus?: I chose Gustavus because of the community of people here. Upon visiting and meeting the team and coaches, I immediately felt a sense of family and I could tell that everyone genuinely cared about me. I loved the flexibility to pursue multiple passions of mine between running and choir. Gustavus also has a renowned physics program and was the best option for me financially, so really all the pieces fit.
In your opinion what makes the Gustavus cross country/track and field programs different from other colleges?: The sense of family really sets the Gustavus program apart from other colleges. We put a distinct emphasis on knowing and supporting everyone in all event groups. We have the best cheering section in the conference and we compete for our teammates, not against them. We are committed to excellence in all areas of life, not just on the track.
