Emory Defeats Washington (MO) 6-3 To Claim ITA Division III National Men's Team Indoor Championship,
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Edges Kenyon 5-4 For Third Place

SAINT PETER, Minn. - The Emory men's tennis team claimed its third Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Men's Indoor Championship with a 6-3 win over #1 seed Washington University (Mo.) on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles picked up two doubles wins and four singles victories to win the match. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the #3 seed, defeated #5 seed Kenyon College, 5-4 to earn third place honors. The tournament was played at the Swanson Tennis Center on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College.

In the championship match, Emory jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play as brothers Chris and Michael Goodwin defeated Charlie Cutler and Chris Hoeland 9-7 at the #1 position and Mark Boren and David Caplan defeated Isaac Stein and Max Woods 8-4 at the #2 spot. Washington University claimed one doubles point when John Watts and Nirmal Choradia defeated Oliver Lopp and Philipp Overdiek 8-6. In singles play, Washington's John Watts evened the match when he defeated Michael Goodwin 6-1, 6-0 at the #1 position. However, Emory would win the next three points at #2, #3, and #4 singles. Colin Egan regained the lead for the Eagles at the #4 position when he defeated Isaac Stein 6-3, 6-3. In a tightly contested match at the #3 position, Mark Boren pulled out a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over Max Woods to pull Emory within one point of the title. The decisive point came at #2 singles when Chris Goodwin defeated Charlie Cutler 6-1, 6-3. Both squads split points at #5 and #6 singles to make the final score 6-3 in favor of Emory.

Emory claimed its third ITA Division III Team Indoor Title in the nine-year history of the tournament (2004, 2005, 2009). The other six titles have been won by Gustavus (2002, 2003, 2006, 2008) and UC-Santa Cruz (2001, 2007). The Eagles defeated #7 seed Mary Washington (9-0), #3 seed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (6-3), and #1 seed Washington University (6-3) to claim the title.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps garnered third place honors with a 5-4 win over Kenyon College. The Stags lead 2-1 after the doubles matches, and picked up singles wins at #3 from Robbie Erani, #4 from Russell Brockett, and #6 Eric MacColl to earn the trophy.

The consolation matches were completed late Saturday night as Gustavus Adolphus College defeated UC-Santa Cruz 5-4 to finish fifth, while Trinity University (TX) defeated the University of Mary Washington 7-2 to finish seventh. Eight teams participated in the tournament.

Washington (MO) and Emory Advance To Finals At ITA Division III National Men's Team Indoor Championships

SAINT PETER, Minn. - The seeds went according to plan on Saturday as top-seed Washington University (Mo.) and No. 2 seed Emory advanced to the title match at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III National Men's Team Indoor Championships. Washington University (St. Louis, Mo.) defeated #5 Kenyon 8-1 in one semifinal match, while Emory defeated #3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 6-3 in the other semifinal match. The championship and the third place match between Kenyon and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps will be played at 9:00 am on Sunday. The tournament is being played on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College.

On Saturday, Washington University raced out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play and then won five of the six singles matches to claim the 8-1 victory over Kenyon College (Gambier, Ohio). Isaac Stein and Max Woods of Washington defeated Daniel Becker and Charles Brody of Kenyon, 8-5 at the #2 position and then the Bears #1 tandem of Charlie Culter and Chris Hoeland defeated Michael Greenberg and William VandenBerg, 8-6. Washington wrapped up the doubles sweep with John Watts and Nirmal Chordia defeating Jeremy Polster and Tomas Piskacek 8-4.

Washington sealed the victory with straight set wins at #4 and #5 singles as Danny Levy defeated William VandenBerg 6-3, 7-5 at #5, and then Isaac Stein defeated Charles Brody 6-4, 6-2 at #4. With the match decided, Kenyon pushed three of the final four matches to super tiebreakers in the last set, as it picked up its lone point at #2 when Tomas Piskacek defeated Charlie Cutler 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7).

In the other semifinal match, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps claimed doubles points at the #2 and #3 positions when Robbie Erani and Eric MacColl defeated Oliver Lopp and Philipp Overdiek 8-6 at #3 and Michael Starr and Ronald Wu defeated Mark Boren and David Caplan 8-6 at #2. Emory took the point at #1 doubles in a tightly contested match with brothers Chris and Michael Goodwin defeating Guillaume Schils and Lawrence Wang 8-6 heading into singles play.

The Goodwin brothers carried their momentum over into singles play as Michael Goodwin defeated Lawrence Wang 6-3, 6-4 at #1 and Chris Goodwin defeated Michael Starr 6-3, 6-2 at #2 to give Emory a 3-2 lead. Robbie Erani of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps evened the match when he defeated Mark Boren 7-5, 6-3 at the #3 spot. However, the Eagles won the remaining singles matches in straight set as Oliver Lopp sealed the victory at #5 by defeating Victor Chien 6-2, 6-1.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Advance To Semifinals At ITA Division III National Championships

SAINT PETER, Minn. - Top-seed Washington University (Mo.), No. 2 seed Emory, No. 3 seed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and No. 5 Kenyon posted quarterfinal wins Friday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III National Men's Team Indoor Championships. Gustavus Adolphus is hosting this year's championship for the seventh consecutive year at the Swanson Tennis Center where eight of the top 15 teams in Division III tennis are competing to determine the 2009 ITA National Indoor Champion.

Washington University (Mo.) posted a convincing 9-0 first round win over No. 8 Trinity (Texas) as the Bears failed to drop a single set during the match. Washington University will face Kenyon, which was 5-4 winners over UC-Santa Cruz, in one of Saturday's 2 p.m. semifinals. In the other semifinal, No. 2 seed Emory will take on No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, as Emory defeated No. 7 Mary Washington 9-0 and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps defeated No. 6 seed and defending champion Gustavus Adolphus 6-3.

Saturday's schedule has the losers of Friday's matches playing in consolation matches beginning at 8:30 a.m., while the winners will play in semifinal matches beginning at 2 p.m. Consolation finals are slated to start at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The third place and championship matches will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Gustavus Set to Host Ninth Annual ITA Division III Indoor Championships

ST. PETER, MINN. - Gustavus Adolphus College is set to host the ninth annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Division III Indoor Championship at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter, Minnesota. Eight of the top 15 teams in Division III tennis will play off to determine the 2009 ITA National Indoor Champion. The four-time ITA Indoor champions Golden Gusties will defend their 2008 title as the #6 seed entering the tournament.

Joining Gustavus (#9 in the current ITA Div. III poll), will be Washington University of St. Louis, Missouri (#1), Emory University of Atlanta, Georgia (#2), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges of Claremont, California (#3), the University of California at Santa Cruz (#4), Kenyon College of Gambier, Ohio (#8), the University of Mary Washington of Fredericksburg, Virginia (#10), and Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas (#12). Kenyon is appearing in the ITA Indoor Championships for the first time.

The tournament will begin on Friday morning with #1 Washington University (Missouri) facing #8 Trinity (Texas) and #4 UC-Santa-Cruz will battle #5 Kenyon at 11:30 am. In the afternoon, #2 Emory plays #7 Mary Washington and #3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps takes on #6 Gustavus. The afternoon matches are slated to begin at 5:00 pm. Saturday's schedule has the losers of Friday's matches playing in consolation matches beginning at 8:30 am, while the winners will play in semifinal matches beginning at 2:00 pm. Consolation finals are slated to start at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The third place and championship matches will begin at 9:00 am on Sunday morning.

Many of the top players in Division III will be taking part in the tournament including five of the top 10 ranked singles players. Some of the top ranked players include John Watts of Washington University (Missouri), Chris Goodwin of Emory, Mike Greenberg of Kenyon, Max Liberty-Point of UC-Santa Cruz, and John Kauss of Gustavus.

In doubles play, seven of the top 10 tandems in the country will be present including John Kauss and Mike Burdakin of Gustavus, Chris and Michael Goodwin of Emory, Bobby Cocanougher and Cory Kowal of Trinity (TX), Max Liberty-Point and Ilya Gendelman of UC-Santa Cruz, Guillaume Schils and Lawrence Wang of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and two duos from Washington University (Missouri) in the team of Charlie Cutler and Chris Hoeland and the team of Isaac Stein and Max Woods.

This will be the seventh consecutive year that the ITA Division III Indoor Championships have been held at the Swanson Tennis Center on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota.
