Sponsored by the Sponberg family, which includes many Gustavus graduates and sports
enthusiasts, the Sponberg Award was initially presented to the basketball player with the
highest scholastic average. In 1969 it was changed to the team’s Most Valuable Player
award, as selected by the players. Then in 1994 the honor was split into two separate
awards: the Highest Scholastic Average and the Most Valuable Player.
