Evie Cieslar Erdman

In the early 1970s, Evie Cieslar Erdman was a balance beam and floor exercise specialist on Gustavus gymnastics teams that placed eighth in 1971 and tenth in 1972 at the Division For Girls and Women in Sports (DGWS) National Championships. She was named the team's co-Most Valuable Gymnast in 1972. It was during those four years "On the Hill" that Erdman developed a passion for Gustavus and its gymnastics program, which started a friendship that has lasted for over 40 years. She has volunteered her time to help in virtually every aspect of the Gustavus gymnastics program over the past four decades starting with her serving as a master instructor at the Gustavus gymnastics camps in the mid-1970s. A gifted choreographer, Erdman has helped the Gustavus coaching staff and Gustie gymnasts create floor routines for state, regional, and national competitions including several that went on to win national titles. As a meet organizer, she has served as the director for numerous state and regional competitions hosted by Gustavus including the National Collegiate Gymnastics Associations (NCGA) National Championships in 1990 and 2002. Erdman, a veteran rules clinician and judge, has trained over 70 Gustie gymnasts that have gone on to become high school and collegiate officials throughout the Upper Midwest. For the past 15 years, she has supplied judges for the Gustavus High School Invitational, a meet that includes high school teams coached by former Gustavus gymnasts and officiated by current and former Gustie gymnasts. Erdman's commitment to the College, the gymnastics coaching staff and its student athletes has helped Gustavus provide one of the truly unique gymnastics experiences for young women in all of collegiate gymnastics over the past 40 years.

After graduating in 1973 with a major in physical education, Erdman coached and taught gymnastics at the New Ulm Turners for two years before accepting a teaching and head gymnastics coaching position at Mankato State University in 1974. While at Mankato State, Erdman coached six teams that participated in the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Region 6 meet. Since 1980, she has focused her energies on officiating gymnastics at the high school and collegiate levels and has helped hundreds of students receive their Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) gymnastics official rating. Erdman has worked as a MSHSL official for nearly 40 years, while also serving as a MSHSL rules clinician for the past 25 years. Evie, who is currently employed as a Scholarship Program Manager at Scholarship America in Saint Peter, lives in Elysian, Minnesota with her husband, Steve.
