Terry Anderson Corwin ’72 Inducted 1997
Gymnastics and Swimming & Diving
Terry Anderson Corwin was one of several standout gymnasts for Coach Nancy Baker as the Gusties burst onto the national scene in the early '70s. After transferring from Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis in 1970, Corwin became an integral part of the 1971 and 1972 Gustie squads that won two state titles, one regional title, and placed eighth and tenth respectively at the AIAW National Meet.
An all-around competitor, Corwin placed fifth at the region meet and 18th at the national meet in 1971. At that time, there were no divisions in women's athletics and Corwin was competing against major universities that are now Division I institutions. In addition to her gymnastic abilities, she was also a member of the swimming team, earning a letter as a diver in 1971.
After graduating cum laude with a major in physical education, Corwin accepted a teaching position in Red Wing. During her three years in Red Wing, Corwin established the girls' gymnastics and track teams. In 1975 she was named the head gymnastics coach and physical education instructor at Valley City State University.
While coaching and teaching at Valley City, Corwin pursued a master's degree in physical education at Moorhead State, which she received in 1980. She served as the gymnastics coach at Valley City until 1995. While in Valley City, Corwin also developed and directed the Valley Twisters, one of the most successful youth gymnastics programs in the Upper Midwest. She is presently the Director of Instructional Technology at Valley City State and in the final stages of writing her dissertation for a Ph.D. in educational technology at Iowa State.
