After a two-year absence from the team competition at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association National Championships, the Gusties made their return in grand style.
Coach Jerry Connolly’s squad started slow with an average team score of 134.18 in its first six meets, but came on strong in February with an average of 140.14 in seven meets. A second place finish in the region meet in early March set the stage for the team’s strong national tournament finish at Rhode Island College in late March.
The Gusties wrapped up their 1998 season with a sixth place finish at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) National Championship meet which was held in Providence, Rhode Island.
Gustavus compiled a team score of 144.60. Ithaca College won the title with a score of 148.875. Individually, Gustavus was led by sophomore Katie Kortuem who finished fourth in the all-around with a score of 36.375 and first year competitor Molly Nemes who place tenth in the all-around with a total of 35.80.
Both Kortuem and Nemes earned All-America honors as a result of their top ten finishes. Senior Emily Pohland wrapped up her career finishing tenth in both the uneven bars and the balance beam. Emily Pohland and Gwen Kelly were named to the NCGA National All-Academic team.
