Football Team Compiles 6-4 Mark, Sets 20 School Records in the Process - You could describe the 1997 Gustavus football team in a lot of ways, but boring would definitely not be one of them as the Guscame from behind to claim three of the six victories and three of their four losses were decided on the final play of the game.

The Gustie offense was an explosive unit that averaged 30.5 points and 402.9 yards per game. Junior quarterback Bob Southworth provided a lot of the excitement as he broke eight school passing records including touchdown passes in a season with 20.

Junior placekicker Ryan Boutwell set school marks for career field goals with 27 and career kick scoring points with 141, while junior wide receiver Chris Swansson set a new school record for touchdown receptions in a season with 10. Defensively, the Gusties recorded the program’s first shutout in six years with a 34-0 victory over Colorado College and sophomore safety Steve Leth set the school mark for longest interception return with an 84-yard return for a touchdown against St. Thomas.

Five players were selected to the all-conference team including senior safety Shane Thielke, senior defensive tackle Brent Staples, Bob Southworth, Chris Swansson and Ryan Boutwell. In addition, Thielke, Staples and sophomore offensive tackle Dan Duncan were named to the GTE Academic All-District team.
