Season Review

After handily winning the season opener against University of Wisconsin-Superior 45-14, the Gusties helped St. John’s quarterback John Lahti to a new passing record, as the Johnnies clobbered the Gusties 38-7. Coach Steve Byrne admitted that “Gustavus defeated itself in all facets of the game.”

The Gusties travelled to O’Shaughnessy Stadium in a close contest with St. Thomas. The first quarter provided a minor milestone for MIAC football when Gustavus scored on a 10-yard run by Mike Schumacher, and the Tommies blocked the conversion attempt allowing Tommy back Dave Heller to pick up the football and zip 86 yards for two defensive points. Heller’s defensive maneuver scored the first points ever allowed in the MIAC under a 1988 NCAA rule that allows a defensie player to return a blocked extra-point attempt for two points. Schumacher was the top runner of the day with 98 yards on 28 carries.

Gustavus beat Macalester, but lost the next game to the Carleton Knights, ending Gustie hopes for a second straight conference title. The Gusties redeemed themselves the next week by handing St. Olaf its ninth consecutive defeat. Freshman Jay Kirchoff treated the Homecoming crowd to four field goals. But Gustavus continued its pattern of irregularity by losing to Hamline and beating Bethel.

The GAC team finally played up to its potential at the end of the seaon. As Peggy Haroldson told it in the Weekly, the Gusties “pounded previously unbeated and No. 1-ranked Concordia into submission in near-blizzard conditions at Hollingsworth Field 47-20.” Fullback Scott Anderson led the offense to 340 yards rushing and six touchdowns, while senior quarterback Dean Kraus, completing 14 of 25 passes, added to school and conference records by reaching 6436 career yards. Anderson was named the MIAC offensive player of the week.

The final game of the season ended with a 35-14 victory against Augsburg in the Metrodome. Kraus completed 14 of 18 passes for three touchdowns. With this game, the Gusties ended the season with an overall record of 6-4.
