Season Review

The 1982 Gustavus team put the cap on what turned out to be an outstanding “come-back season” with an exciting 26-23 victory over Concordia College in the final game of the season. The win gave Coach Dennis Raarup’s gridders a 6-4 record in an injury-plagued season in which only two of seven backfield regulars played in all ten games. It also represented the squad’s fourth straight MIAC win and gave the team a share of second place at 6-2.

Coach Raarup characterized the ‘82 season as “three seasons in one.” After losing the season opener to Wisconsin-Stout, the Gusties discovered their offensive potential in the form of freshman wide receiver Tom Illies, who finished just 31 yards shy of the all-time Gustavus single-seaon reception yardage record in his first year of college competition. Raarup’s “first season” ended, however, after wins over Bethel and Hamline and injuries to some key individuals. The middle season saw the Gusties go 0-3 after meeting a hot St. Thomas passing attack, playing in the mud with St. John’s, and sustaining more injuries-notably the loss for the season of starting quarterback Scott Swanson in the team’s loss to St. Cloud State. In the third season, the Gusties were 4-0; back-up quarterback Eric Lande directed wins over Augsburg and St. Olaf, and sophomore running back Rick Straka rushed for 150 yards in the 34-7 Homecoming win over Macalester. The final game, with Concordia, was a fitting conclusion for the team’s come-back script, as the offensive unit mounted an 80-yard drive to score in the final minute.
