Season Review

The MIAC race was a hotly contested affair in 1971, and it took an 18-12 victory over Minnesota-Duluth on the last day of the conference play to give the Golden Gusties, under first year coach Dr. Dennis Raarup, a piece of the crown.

The Gusties let the rest of the league know that they were to be reckoned with early, by surprising defending champion Concordia on a wind swept day in Moorhead. After spotting the Cobbers a 7-0 first quarter lead, the Gusties dominated the rest of the way, scoring a touchdown in each of the next three quarters.

During the game with Macalester, fullback Tom Dahlberg broke the 2000 yard mark for career yardage to set another Gustavus record. Lopsided wins over Macalester and Augsburg followed, setting the stage for a showdown meeting with the St. John’s Johnnies in Collegeville. The Johnnies never trailed, although at one point in the fourth quarter it looked as if the Gusties had stolen the momentum away from the host team. Quarterback Rick Webb played one of his finest games ever, hitting on 13 of 26 pass attempts and scrambling and passing the Gusties almost single-handedly to their only touchdown of the day. In that drive Webb himself either ran or passed on 13 consecutive plays, finally scoring on a one yard keeper.

Without the services of leading rusher Tom Dahlberg, who was injured in the St. John’s game, the Gusties, out-gained and out-played, held on to defeat Hamline by six points. The Pipers were inside the Gustie ten with about a minute to play, but they were unable to score. Raarup’s charges then rebounded for an easy shoutout win over St. Thomas.

Trailing 12-7 after three quarters, the Gusties rallied for 11 points and a victory in the conference finale in Duluth. Dahlberg returned to peak form against the Bulldogs, rushing for 103 yards in 26 carries. Co-captain Brian Robb ended the season leading all scorers with 66 points. Coach Dennis Raarup quickly dispelled any doubters of his ability as his team captured a share of the MIAC title with St. John’s.
