Season Review

The Golden Gusties reign as the 1967 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football champions. After a near miss in 1966, the team is number one for the first time since 1959-they were riding on a string of seven championships. Besides the all important football title, the Gusties, as a team and individuals, were recipients of several honors. Offensively the squad led the conference in total offense and team rushing, gaining 2198 yards against their MIAC opponents. The defense also held their own as they ended up on top of the conference heap. They ranked number one in rushing defense as they gave up only 688 yards on the ground.

Stu Seibert, fullback, stayed healthy all season and won the rushing tilt he lost the previous year when he was injured late in the season. Mark Embretson and Lyle Holmberg, the fine halfbacks who rounded out the best set of running backs in the conference, ended up ranking sixth and seventh, respectively, in individual rushing. Quarterback Lane Erickson ended the conference season with the best pass completion record in the MIAC. Lane threw the ball 85 times and completed 48 of those for a completion percentage of .565. Split end Tom Lange caught 24 passes for 290 yards and one touchdown which ranked him third in the conference. First year defensive halfback Buster West won the MIAC pass interception crown with six thefts. Ron Cady was tied for second with four interceptions. Stu Seibert finished fifth in scoring by racking up five touchdowns.

After five consecutive conference wins, the victory over Augsburg clinched the MIAC title for the Gusties. Jocko Nelson received an additional honor from his fellow coaches when he was named “MIAC Coach of the Year.”
