Season Review

A 28-7 defeat at the hands of Hamline University in the final conference game of the 1966 season gave the Pipers the MIAC crown and earned the Gusties second place with a 4-1-2 record. Gustavus finished competition with a 5-2-2 mark, splitting their non-conference contests. The Gusties fell in their season opener to tough Augustana 17-7. A Steve Hokanson-to-Rick Evans pass accounted for the touchdown, a combination that accounted for five touchdowns throughout the year. The season finale saw the Gusties journey to Decorah, Iowa, to tangle with once-defeated Luther where they were victorious in a 13-0 game.

In MIAC play the Gustavus squad kept itself in contention for first place laurels until the last week of the season; both Hamline and Gustavus entered the final game tied for the top. Enroute to second place, Gustavus claimed victories over co-favorites St. Thomas and Concordia, and earned a tie with defending conference and NAIA champions St. John’s and UMD. Augsburg and Macalester both fell to the Gusties on their homecoming weekends.

Individually, seniors Rick Evans and place-kicker Tom Harmon led the team in scoring. Evans, the key target of Gustie throwers, tallied five times for 30 points, while Harmon’s toe accounted for 24 points, among them two 34 yard field goals. Junior fullback Stuart Seibert, who suffered a serious knee injury midway in the campaign, led the squad in rushing, averaging 3.8 yards per carry. Mark Embretson, junior halfback, although hobbled for two games with a badly sprained ankle, followed close behind with a 3.5 yards per carry average.
