Season Review

November, 1965, found the Gustie football team once again possessing a conference record of four wins and three losses, as in 1964. Unlike 1964, a four-and-three record did not bring a third place in the MIAC. In an outstanding conference that boasts a national champion in each of the previous three years, Gustavus gridders had a season worthy of much praise. Fine work by a strong defensive squad characterized the style that kept the team in contention for the championship through most of the season. The record showed only one loss prior to meeting St. John’s-the 1965 national champion. St. John’s and the final disappointment of the season, the St. Thomas game, tumbled the Gusties to fourth place, behind each of the teams to which they had lost. A few individuals performed well enough to earn special recognition: Co-captain John Rudolph’s work in the line brought him the honor of being named to the All-Conference team and Co-captain Earl Gray was selected Most Valuable Player by his teammates for his aggressive defensive play. Junior lineman Tom Harmon proved to be the team’s high scorer by having the league’s best kicking percentage on field goals and extra points and was named to both the All-Conference and All-Lutheran teams.
