Season Review

The fabulous ‘50’s are long gone. After eight championships in ten years the 1960 pre-season forecast predicted that Gustavus would have to settle for the role of a spoiler rather than that of a title contender.

The predictions were true. Gustavus rose to the occasion on Homecoming to hand the mighty Cobbers of Concordia a shocking 34-14 setback and knock the Cobs out of the title race. But the Gusties did not have the strength or the breaks to stay in the fight for the championship.

The 1960’s team was very inexperienced due to graduating lettermen at every position, including five All-Conference selections. The young, inexperienced line improved rapidly but injuries depleted the ranks. The Gusties major trouble was their inability to score extra points, and their tie with St. John’s was due to missing the extra point attempt.

Gustavus opened the season against a tough Augustana squad, and the Little All-American passing combination of Luce to Simko stopped the Gusties 41-13. The team opened the conference schedule by drubbing a weak Hamline team 37-6. Gustavus stopped St. Thomas 6-0 in the rain, but then lost their home opener 20-14 to Duluth.

Title-bound Concordia invaded the hill in St. Peter and the Swedes “Canned the Cobs” 34-14 as Holly’s troops played flawless football. After that the Gusties never regained their form as they lost to Macalester 27-26, Augsburg 19-18, and splashed to a 6-6 tie with St. John’s on a rain-soaked gridiron. The final game of the season was with Youngstown. Gustie quarterback Paul Thompson fired four touchdown passes in the free scoring contest, but it wasn’t enough as Dr. Hollingsworth’s coaching career ended on a losing note, 55-35.
