Class of 2010

May 2011

Hello Class of 2010!

It’s hard to believe it is already May, though the weather sure doesn’t feel like it...  This time last year we were counting down the days until the most important moment of our college career:  Senior Week.  Ok, maybe Senior Week wasn’t the most important part, but the diploma we received at the end of the week validated all of our hard work and accomplishments throughout the past four years.

By reading the monthly class updates, we know that many of you have put your diploma to good use.  Our fellow Gusties are attending graduate schools across the nation, working for some of the top companies in the world and volunteering their time and skills with globally-recognized organizations.  It is amazing how much we have accomplished after just one year!

While we are no longer Gustavus students, hopefully you have had an opportunity to return to “the hill.”  We encourage you to stay involved with your alma mater, whether it be keeping up with Gustavus news, attending campus events, socializing with your college friends, or giving a gift back to the school.  Already 10% of the Class of 2010 has given their gift.  These gifts are allowing current and future Gusties to have the opportunities and experiences that made our time at Gustavus special.  If you would like to make your gift, visit

For all of you in the Twin Cities area don’t forget about our May 14th event!  The Classes of 2006 - 2010 are invited to the Uptown Cafeteria from 8:00-11:00 p.m. for a casual Gustie gathering.  For more information, check out our Facebook event page.!/event.php?eid=203414113014746.  Hope to see you there!

With Gustie Pride,

Alison Utke and Sara Schnell

Nobel Conference 47 - The Brain and Being Human - Oct. 4 & 5, 2011

In recent years, novel collaborations between neuroscientists and researchers in seemingly disparate fields have forged new ideas and new questions about the working of the brain.  Aspects of daily human life are now incorporated into the scientific arena in a new synthesis to understand the human experience and what it means to be human.  The braiding of neuroscience with the humanities, arts, social sciences, theology, and engineering has empowered explanations of the motivations and operations of our daily activities.  This insight engenders uncertainty in terms of how to best apply this knowledge responsibly and ethically, and perhaps is even challenging the distinctiveness of our own species.
