Class of 2010
Greetings Class of 2010,
I cannot believe how quickly summer has gone! This season has truly been one like no other thus far in my life, and I’m sure most of us could say the same. With graduation growing further away from our recent memories, new exciting opportunities begin to arise in the present.
For me, I’ve occupied my time of transition with work on-campus in the technology services department. Witnessing the changes that occur on campus between school years is one of the many perks of staying close to the Gustavus community during the warm summer months. Highlights of the summer on-campus include yet another blooming of the corpse flower, Perry II (watch the time-lapse video online at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LddeTVrxg4), and the annual ritual of first-year class registration, which was strangely nostalgic.
Apart from work, for many of us this summer has been one filled with celebration, weddings, and time spent enjoying the outdoors. Here is what a few of our classmates have been keeping their summer months busy with:
Kathryn Casey and Conor Bennett ’09 became engaged August 20th in Grand Marais. The wedding is set for June 11, 2011 at Gustavus. Ross Elenkiwich began studying architecture at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. Amber Hanson is working in government relations with AgriBank. Nicholas Harper started classes at the University of Iowa Law School on a Merit Scholarship. Kyle Hunt began classes at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry Kelly Katherine Nelson is working for Teach for America in Denver Colorado. She is teaching ELL (English Language Learners) 4th and 5th grade students. Adam Strand started at the University of South Dakota Medical School in Vermillion, SD. Luke Paquin recently departed for Jerusalem, Israel, to work with the ELCA in their YAGM (Young Adults in Global Mission) program.
It is somewhat difficult to believe that the summer months are now coming to a close. Class is about to start for the 2010-11 school year, it will not be long before the Nobel Conference and Homecoming (September 25) is just around the corner.
Until next time, keep it classy!

Ad Campaign to Launch This Month
Late this summer and into the fall, Gustavus is launching a statewide advertising campaign for recruitment. Targeted to reach Minnesota high school students and their parents, the ad campaign will include radio, newspaper, magazine, outdoor/billboard, and social media outlets in and around the Twin Cities, Rochester, St. Cloud, Duluth, and Mankato. Some places you will see or hear ads include the Minnesota edition of the U.S. News & World Report‘s annual college ranking guide in September, the Star Tribune of Minneapolis, the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the Metro Lutheran newspaper, 101.3 FM, some high school newspapers, Facebook, and more.
150th Anniversary Commemorative Alumni Directory
The Gustavus Alumni Association is bringing together about 25,000 Gusties to celebrate the College’s 150th anniversary. In partnership with Publishing Concepts, Inc. (PCI), Gustavus will produce the 150th Anniversary Commemorative Alumni Directory. Over the next couple of months, PCI will be contacting Gustavus alumni via phone, mail, and e-mail to request that you update your information. We know you don’t want to provide your information to just anyone, so we want you to be aware of this project and encourage your participation. For more information, call the Office of Alumni Relations at 800-487-8437.
