Class of 1990

June 2011

Class of 1990,

Summer is upon us!  We wanted to take the opportunity to share some campus news and also news from the class of 1990, before signing off until next fall.

Tank ya, tank ya, tank ya.  The fiscal year closed May 31, and the giving totals for the class of 1990 increased in both participation and total giving.  The class achieved 26.8% total participation, up from 19.6% participation a year ago.  Total giving this year was over $19,000, up from $18,000 a year ago.  THANK YOU for your generosity and ongoing support!

Give to Gustavus Day.  In more news on Gustavus giving, the college sponsored “Give to Gustavus Day” on April 21.  The single-day effort raised over $25,000 for the Annual Fund.

Out with the old, in with the new.  On May 27, Gustavus held Commencement ceremonies where 587 seniors received their degrees.  (Our class graduated 511.)  Thirty graduated summa cum laude (GPA 3.9 or higher); 104 graduated magna cum laude (GPA 3.7 – 3.899); and 131 graduated cum laude (GPA 3.5 – 3.699).  And, next year’s entering freshman class will be the biggest ever.  At the end of May, the Admission Office had already received over 750 deposits.  Hmmm, maybe those Uhler 4’s could be 6’s and those Uhler 6’s could be 8’s?

Sesquicentennial.  Translated, that’s “150.”  In 2011-12, Gustavus will celebrate its 150th academic year.  Many special activities and additional alumni awards are planned for next year, in honor of this event.  Visit and stay tuned for more information from the class agents on the Sesquicentennial news/events.

Margaret Anderson Kelliher was recently named one of the 2011 “Minnesotans on the Move” by Finance & Commerce, Minnesota’s only daily business newspaper and online resource.  Margaret is president of the Minnesota High Tech Association.

Liesl Batz recently started her own floral design business, Liesl B Floral.  One of her floral designs was featured at the “Art in Bloom” exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, April 28 – May 1.  Check out some of Liesl’s beautiful designs at

Dan Michel, Digital Marketing Manager for Feeding America, the leading domestic hunger relief organization in the country, recently traveled with Feeding America to Joplin, Missouri.  Dan and Feeding America helped the local food bank serving the area devastated by the tornado in late May.

In addition to his day job as a Hennepin County public defender, Mark Devaraj, drummer, and his band “High on Stress” can be seen and heard at various venues around the Twin Cities and in Minot, North Dakota.  Mark and the band will perform Friday, June 24, at Tunes@Noon, Peavey Plaza, downtown Minneapolis.  Check it out!

And finally, if his Facebook page is any indication, Rich Mills is looking forward to summer vacation.

As always, send us your news−we’d love to hear from you.  Enjoy the summer, and we’ll be in touch in the fall.  Remember, Homecoming is October 1!
