Happy 2010! We hope you had a wonderful holiday season and are ringing in the new year and new decade. We have lots of news to report and also want to fill you in on the activity surrounding reunion planning for next fall.
20-Year Reunion / Homecoming 2010 – DATE CHANGE!!
In case you haven’t heard, the dates for Homecoming weekend and our 20-year reunion have been changed. Reunion weekend will be Friday-Saturday, September 24-25, 2010, with the Homecoming game on September 25, at 1:30 pm. Mark your calendars! We will be serving lunch in the Dive before the game, and also will be hosting the Class of 1990 Hospitality Tent at the game beginning at 12:30.
We reserved a block of rooms at the AmericInn Motel in St. Peter for Saturday night, September 25, under the Class of 1990. You can call 800-396-5007 or email www.americinn.com/hotels/MN/StPeter to reserve a room.
Reunion planning update
Many thanks to the committee members for their time and support so far! We had a fun kick off meeting last spring and also in November at Dan Homstad’s home. If you have any ideas or suggestions for reunion weekend, please let us know─we want your input. Also, if you’re interested in helping with reunion planning, contact the Alumni Office or one of the Class Agents directly.
Reunion Committee Meeting – February 27
The College will be holding a reunion committee meeting on Saturday, February 27, at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Eden Prairie (13600 Technology Drive), from 8:30 a.m – 2 p.m. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Reunion committee members are strongly encouraged to attend, and if you’re not on the planning committee but are interested in becoming involved, please join us! It’s not too late for your ideas as we make final preparations for the reunion. RSVP by February 24 to Kathy Erlandsen at 866-487-3863 or firstname.lastname@example.org, if you plan to attend.
Class of 1990 Facebook Group
Also remember that we have a Gustavus Class of 1990 group on Facebook. We’ll use the page to communicate reunion and other class news (including old photos─look if you dare). If you’re on Facebook, look for the Class of 1990 group, and share your Gustavus stories, memories and photos.

We wanted to let you know about a new video on YouTube, “Make Your Life Count.” Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4an60vO5TU , and pass it along to friends, family, neighbors. The video is a part of the new branding initiative at Gustavus.
John Heller, Playa del Rey, California, is asset vice president, operations and compliance, Cathay Bank Wealth Management, Los Angeles, California.
Margaret Anderson Kelliher, Minneapolis, Minnesota, is currently Speaker, Minnesota House of Representatives, and recently announced her run for Minnesota governor in 2010.
Chris Olson, Oronoco, Minnesota, is regional sales manager, Bayer HealthCare, Diabetes Care Division.
Sue Courrier Reed, Flower Mound, Texas, is chief operating officer at SMSE, Irving, Texas.
Greg Sands, Edwards, Colorado, is partner/project manager for Hermes Resort Properties. Greg is currently managing construction of Roundup River Ranch, a camp for children with life-threatening illnesses, which is set to open in the summer of 2011. Check out www.roundupriverranch.org to learn more.
Tony Severt, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and his wife, Kathryn, welcomed son Grant Stanley Severt on October 9, 2009. Congratulations Tony and Kathryn!

During this time of economic uncertainty, many of our alumni, new graduates, and their family members are in need of health insurance. Short-term and permanent health insurance options are available through the alumni insurance program. The program is typically promoted to new grads just before and after graduation, but in response to the rising unemployment rate and in an effort to help all of those in need, we’re spreading the word more broadly this year. This is also perfect for children of alums who are graduating (even if they did not attend Gustavus Adolphus College) and aren’t yet covered under an employer’s health plan. Martin Luther King Day Events
Two events were held in celebration of Martin Luther King Day. Speaking at Chapel from on Monday, Jan. 18 was C. T. Vivian, a minister, author, and close friend of Martin Luther King, Jr. during the American Civil Rights Movement. Also on Jan. 18, Mixed Blood Theatre presented the play “Daughters of Africa.”
New “Make Your Life Count” Website and Facebook Page
Gustavus has created a new “Make Your Life Count” website that includes a variety of feature stories exemplifying the College’s new brand position launched last month. The stories celebrate Gustavus students, alumni, faculty, staff, programs, events, and organizations. The website may be accessed from the Gustavus homepage by clicking on the “Make Your Life Count” brandline (in the upper right hand corner) or by visiting makeyourlifecount.blog.gustavus.edu. The “Make Your Life Count” stories are also posted on a new Facebook page. Become a fan and share your own Gustavus story. When new feature stories are published, they will be communicated on the Gustavus News Twitter, and you may also subscribe (on the Make Your Life Count website) to receive e-mail updates. To submit a “Make Your Life Count” story suggestion, click on the “Submit your story” link or e-mail the Gustavus Office of Marketing and Communication at email@example.com.
“Come on You Gusties” Breakfast
Once a month, Gusties gather for coffee, breakfast, and great conversation along with a campus speaker. All Gusties are welcomed and invited to the breakfast, third Wednesday of the month, 8-9:30 a.m. at the Doubletree Hotel, Minneapolis-Park Place, 1500 Park Place Boulevard. Cost is $10 at the door. Upcoming speakers: Doug Minter ’79 Director of Student Financial Aid and Kirk Carlson ’95, Associate Director of Student Financial Aid – Feb. 17.
