Class of ’77
35-Year Reunion ― October 12-14, 2012
Greetings to all from Greg Nelson,
When I think back to our first year at Gustavus, I remember we had these small get together groups organized by the administration to help us get acquainted. The first person I can remember meeting was Rad Royer. Now, thirty-five years later plus four, I am working with him on our reunion. Two other good friends from the Omega Kappa fraternity that are still good friends today are Dave Olson and Bob Vukas, who are the other two on this reunion committee. You should hear our conference calls! We get the work done, but keep going off on tangents on memories of old.
I am also presently working on my thirty year dental school reunion. Many of these people are scattered all over the state and country but through letters and emails, I am able to become reacquainted with several of them again. Many classmates from the University of Minnesota Dental School Class of 1982 will be here in April to attend that reunion. At our age, I think it is likely that this reunion could very well be our last significant reunion because of the many changes that occur in our lives as we get older. As time passes, retirements, family commitments, and of course, health issues, affect our ability to attend events such as this.
When Ole looked at the meeting room at L’Hotel Sofitel and called to express how thrilled he was with it, I remembered from the past not to get too excited. Ole and I were roommates for two years – one year in college and one year after college. I recall that he often got very excited about something, but that excitement was often followed by a letdown! But after personally seeing the actual venue, I realize that this room has the perfect design for our reunion. It even has a great bar! The room also features quiet areas to talk and outside tables too, if we happen to have a nice, warm October evening.
I remember our OK frat initiation in the spring of 1974 in back of Sohre Hall. We had to do calisthenics at about 6 a.m. .Then, we had water balloons thrown at us. These activities were led by fellow OK Paul “Hecktor “ Heckt from the Class of ʼ75. I think many of us knew Hecktor as well as we knew our own classmates. Over the years, I kept a close association with Hecktor as a friend, personal and business lawyer and patient. We met at home, at work and at restaurants. But no matter where we met, always talked about the great times at Gustavus and especially the frat stuff. Hecktor died the week before Christmas last year.
We just don’t know when these friendships are going to end. So maybe we should all get together to reminisce about the old times and get updated on the current stuff in each others’ lives too. The 35 Year Gustavus Class of 1977 Reunion is definitely the one you should plan to attend!
