Class of '75
SEPTEMBER 2000 REUNION UPDATE!
Hello again. Hecktor here. Are you ready for our 25-year Class Reunion? The Reunion Reception is Friday night, September 29, 2000, at 7:00 p.m., at the Hotel Sofitel (Northwest corner of Hwy 494 and Hwy 100, just west of the Radisson Hotel), Bloomington, MN. The homecoming lunch is on Saturday, September 30, 2000, noon, at Gustavus. The luncheon will be hosted in "The Dive," which located where the old swimming pool used to be. The full reunion schedule is at the end of this Gustiegram.
COME ONE, COME ALL!!!
Can you believe it’s been 25 years? Gang, this is going to be a GREAT TIME! We have Hong Kong dentists like Steve Costello coming. We have Hollywood movie stars and producers like Gail (Matthies) and John Wirth. We have all kinds of people from every walk of life coming back to Gustavus. We are going to have a gas!
HAVEN’T SEEN THE CAMPUS AFTER THE TORNADO?
If you guys haven’t seen the post-tornado campus, you are really missing out. The buildings have been repaired and they have planted hundreds of trees. You guys won’t believe your eyes when you see the new Evelyn Young Dining Hall. Talk about a cushy restaurant.
TELL EVELYN THAT YOU LOVE HER!
Speaking of Evelyn, our honorary 1975 Gustie is as spry and nimble as ever. You should have seen her at her brother Ray’s funeral this summer, going from table to table, hugging Gusties and friends, cheering them up, bringing people together. When I reminded her that she was now an honorary member of the Class of 1975, and that we expected her to be at our 25 year reunion, she replied: "I’ll be there, Hecktor." If anyone epitomizes the Gustie Spirit, its people like Evelyn, Ray Sponberg, Cec Eckhoff, Prof. George, and so many others of that generation. They have given so much to Gustavus. When you see Evelyn at the reunion, please go up and give her a hug. Tell her that Hecktor sent you. More importantly, thank her for her service to her college (and her country), to borrow a line from Senator John McCain. Although she may feel like it sometimes, Evelyn is not the last leaf on the tree. She is part of a long, unbroken line of great leaders that Gustavus has produced. They did their job and did it well. It is now our turn to pick up the torch and carry on the Gustavus traditions. The first step is to show upon September 29 & 30 and start reconnecting with each other. Let’s do it!
NO REGISTRATION PACKET? NO PROBLEMO!!!
It’s so easy to register for the reunion via the Gustavus web site that even a technology-challenged person like me was able to do so. Go to gustavus.edu, hit the yellow "Gustavus Alumni" link, then go to "Reunion Registration" and it will walk you through it. You can pay for it via credit card on a secure internet connection. The cost is $25.00 for the Sofitel and $10.00 for the lunch at Gustavus. You can also register by calling the Alumni Office at 1-800-487-8437.
NEED A HOTEL ROOM?
Gustavus negotiated a special Gustie Discount with the Hotel Sofitel. If you need a place to stay, please call them at 952-835-1900 and tell them you want the Gustavus Rate.
NEED A RIDE DOWN TO GUSTAVUS ON SATURDAY?
If you need a ride to campus on Saturday, September 30 the Alumni Office may have a shuttle van available for us, but they need to know if there is enough interest to merit a shuttle. The van would make just one trip to and from campus. It would probably pick up at 8:00 or 9:00 a.m., at the Hotel Sofitel, and return there that evening. Please call the Alumni Office and let them know if you are interested in this: 1-800-487-8437. If there is not enough interest, they will not offer the service.
HAVE YOU VISITED THE GUSTIE WEB SITE?
By the way, I just took my first visit to the Gustie web site listed above. I thought it was very interesting and easy to use, although I didn’t realize that our class letters were published there. (I suppose I will have to be more careful about what I write next time.) You can also read past class letters, not only for our class, but for all the classes. It’s nice to see what other Gusties are doing. In addition, some of the classes, like the class of 1976, created their own class home page. It has a directory of alumni, with email addresses and links. I tested it out by looking up a fraternity brother of mine, Brad Roberts, and sending him an email directly from the 1976 home page. If you have a couple minutes, you should really contact the Gustie web page and take a quick tour. While you are there, sign the Gustie Guest Book, give Gustavus your current e-mail address and any other address/phone number changes…AND REGISTER FOR THE REUNION!!!
A couple of years ago, I bought a pager from a young Gustie OK named Doug Lamoureax. After I called him every day for two weeks about how to use the pager, Doug stopped by my office unannounced. Here is the conversation that took place:
Doug: OK, Hecktor, hand it over.
Hecktor: Hand what over?
Doug: The pager.
Doug: Hecktor, you’re just not a technogeek. You’re still a geek. You’re just not a technogeek.
That’s a long way of saying that if we want to do a Class of 1975 home page, one of you with more technical skills than me will have to help out. Any ideas for the content of the home page would also be appreciated.
FEELING GUILTY ABOUT NEVER HAVING GIVEN TO GUSTAVUS?
For those of you who haven’t made a contribution to Gustavus yet, how about $25 for 25 years? For those of you who have given generously, thank you, and keep up the good work.
INTERESTED IN MAKING A SPECIAL CLASS OF 1975 GIFT TO GUSTAVUS?
At the reunion, we plan on presenting our classmates with various ideas for a fundraising project for Gustavus. We’ll vote on it and get started some time after the reunion. If you have any ideas for a memorable project, please let us know.
