Class of '70
May 2007

Greetings Gusties,

It is spring and the new green has appeared to transform the dreary landscape.  Do you remember those first days of spring on the hill?  Everyone was out of the dorm and there was life everywhere around the campus.  When I think about Gustavus, it is such fun to remember back when, and to remember the people that we met there, people who shaped who we have become.

One of my favorite authors and philosophers is Frederick Buechner.  He writes these words:

“When you remember me, it means that you have carried something of who I am with you, that I have left some mark of who I am on who you are.  It means that you can summon me back to your mind even though countless years and miles may stand between us.

For as long as you remember me, I am never entirely lost.  When I’m feeling most ghost-like, it’s your remembering me that helps remind me that I actually exist.  If you forget me, one of the ways I remember who I am will be gone.  If you forget me, part of who I am will be gone.”

Gustavus, and the people that we encountered there, are part of our unique memory that we carry with us.  Let us know where life has taken you, so we can remember.

Memories from our classmates:

  • Larry Biederman is founder of LJP Enterprises, specializing in recycling and waste management.  It is wonderful to know that Larry’s biology degree from Gustavus and his continuing interest in the environment have helped businesses save money and benefited the environment at the same time.
  • Karl Schwalm recently completed 25 years of family practice medicine in Oakland, Maryland, having delivered more than 2500 babies in those 25 years.
  • Wendy Eckman Weil sent a short note.  “I went down last night for the gala performance of “The Cherry Orchard” directed by Rob Gardner, his last as head of the theatre department.  We were treated to a wonderful performance, but first we were at the President’s House for dinner and fellowship with some other theater alumni.  Their ad lib remarks were about the incredible, special place Gustavus is and was.  I have two nieces who are students there and they rave.  I don’t know what it is about that place, but whenever I go back, people still stop me and welcome me and it has been 37 years.  The “new” Anderson Theatre (new to us) needs updating, and there are Evelyn Anderson scholarships which are handed out to aspiring thespians each year.  The theatre department will be celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, and it has only had two heads, Evelyn Anderson and Rob Gardner.  Seems incredible that two people could have touched so many lives.  I still think of the things I learned at the feet of Mrs. A and thank her daily for them.  I hope that each of us have the chance to see fit to give back to our school what it so freely gave to us.  I hope all is well, and you are loving this precious life we have been given.”
  • Dan Klein along with brother, Jim ’71 and two other family members represent the third generation working at KleinBank in Chaska, the largest family owned state bank in Minnesota.  KleinBank celebrates its 100th Anniversary this year.
  • Dale Hedstrand (wife, Marilyn Hendricks ’74) is semi-retired as president of Focal Point Financial Services in White Bear Lake.  This last year, Dale received the Lifetime Achievement Award from AIG Financial Advisors.

Lindau Symposium brings Richard John Neuhaus to campus

The Rev. Richard John Neuhaus, a well-known conservative Catholic intellectual, will address “Religion in American Public Life” at the inaugural Lindau Symposium at Gustavus on Tuesday, May 8, 2007, 7:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall.  A gift to the College from Phil ’58 and Nancy Lindau given prior to Phil’s death last April established the symposium at Gustavus that bears his name. Lindau, a commodities trader and executive who served Gustavus as a board member, campaign chair, and longtime volunteer leader, was passionate about the faith-life intersection and the church-relatedness of his alma mater. The symposium, which the Lindau family and College officials anticipate will be an annual event, aims to provide a forum in which diverse intellectual voices and mainstream beliefs and values can be brought together in a liberal arts environment.

“Community Food Security” was the Theme of MAYDAY! Peace Conference

"Community Food Security" was the theme for this year’s Gustavus MAYDAY! Peace Conference, held on May 2.  This is an annual conference, devoted to a topic relating to human rights and social justice.  Among other events, the daylong conference featured presentations from author Janet Poppendieck, who wrote Sweet Charity?: Emergency Food and the End of Entitlement, and Mike Hamm, Ph.D., chair of sustainable agriculture at Michigan State University.
