Class of '65
March 2000

Dear Classmates,

We did not receive any offers to guest write the January letter, so here we are in warm southern Texas trying to get the letter out only a little late. The weather has been unusually warm and sunny here. There are many upper mid-west people down here, and we are wondering who is back home to enjoy the snow and cold that came as we left Minnesota. There are no "snowbirds" here, just "Winter Texans." We met Bob Peterson ’58 (retired Gustavus vice president for development) and his wife at a small restaurant on South Padre Island. It is hard to believe, but he remembers all of you. He has got a great memory for names and graduation years. We noticed his Gustavus shirt and just had to talk with him.

Bev is working on reunion plans, so please check with her if you have any good ideas. The only information I received before we left Minnesota were copies of alumni information forms that some of you had returned to Gustavus. If you have not responded, please find yours and send them back. Here is a quick synopsis of the forms that Gustavus received. I’m going to indicate the number of children within (  ) behind each person’s name if it is in the information sheet.

Dear Gusties, I had the pleasure of receiving an email from Tom Dashiell after our fall class letter. Tom is married to Marilyn (Chelgren ’66) and he writes that their son was married the summer of ’98 in Baton Rouge, LA and they now live in Plano, Texas. They both have engineering degrees. Their daughter, Lea, graduated from Valparaiso University in December with a degree in music education. Thank you for writing, Tom…I also heard from Mary Nielsen Allan via phone. She called to check on the date of the gathering at my house and was hoping that it could take place in February. (I wasn’t that organized.) She was coming to Minnesota to be with her mother. She lives in Pleasant Hill, CA, and teaches fourth graders.

Spring Party in Plymouth, MN

The winter party at my house is now going to be Monday, May 1st! The roads are clear of snow and ice, it stays light longer, and we feel more like "fun" in May. I live in Plymouth, very close to downtown Wayzata. We will have hors d’ oeuvres, cool beverages, and some fun! I would also like (and need) some input from you regarding your thoughts and desires for our 35th reunion this fall. The address is: 630 Brockton Lane, Plymouth. Please RSVP to me at 612-473-8389. Please join us and…Share that Gustie Spirit!

Reunions 2000

It needs to be stated once again…the class of 1965 will celebrate our 35th anniversary on September 29 and 30, 2000. Friday evening, September 29, will be held at Hotel Sofitel in Minneapolis. Saturday, September 30, will be held on the Gustavus campus including seminars, Chapel service, luncheons for reunion classes, Homecoming football game, and 5th Quarter post game party. How many of us have our 2000 calendars marked with those special occasion dates? Also, make a phone call to another Gustie from the class of 1965 and tell them you would like to meet them at this event. Make it a memorable event! Share that Gustie Spirit!

The Gustavus Fund

As your class agent, I continue to challenge each of you to make a significant gift to the Gustavus Fund in celebration and recognition of Gustavus’ contributions to you and your family. Gustavus relies on alumni and friends to give of their time, talents and treasures to maintain and enhance its tradition of excellence. The future of a greater Gustavus is in our hands! Your financial gifts have far reaching effects. Please remember, the gift you give must reach Gustavus by May 31, 2000. A current Gustie student will be calling you soon to ask for your support of the Gustavus Fund. The traditions are worth preserving! Share that Gustie Spirit!

I was on campus in February for the Alumni Board meeting. The new Campus Center is fabulous! We had Friday evening dinner and Saturday’s breakfast and lunch in The Evelyn Young Dining Room. It is beautiful and the food delicious. The next Alumni Board meeting is in May, graduation weekend and Spring Phonorama is just finishing up this week. I will not be calling, as I am working two evenings (parent conferences) and the last week in March is our spring vacation and we will be on the beach, eating French food and snorkeling in St. Maarten! Guslink (Gustie student callers) will be reaching out to you.

Best wishes always,

Bev Nordskog Hedeen
