Class of '40
Evelyn Strom Pearson left a phone message reminding me that I had agreed to write our class letter this time. I needed that reminder. The last few months have been busy ones for me, and I had not done my assignment.
In late August my daughter, Rebecca Gilbertson Merritt ’68, lost her husband unexpectedly. Then in late December my brother, Lee died. He was 93.
But there have been pleasant things happening, too. My daughters Deborah ’74 and Rachel ’66 and their families and Rebecca were all here for Christmas.
Then I must tell you about my 90th birthday. My girls invited about one hundred people and one hundred-fifty came! Among them were twenty-three Gustavians, several from my home town of Clarissa. I was the oldest, and Mark LaVoie, class of 2008, the youngest.
Dale Lund sent some information that I am happy to share. He had earned his Ph.D. in 1957 and was a pastor in Attleboro, MA; he also was a chaplain and religion teacher in Upsala College; and president of Midland Lutheran College. Dale married Ruth Carlson in 1946, and has four children, seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild. He’ll be 90 soon and declares he’s had a wonderful life.
I feel so blessed to have had the Gustavus experience. I was urged to consider Gustavus by choir tour members who sang in my home church when I was a junior in high school. Friendships formed at college have enhanced my life.
I wish all of you a blessed 2009.
