Class of 2005
June 2010

5-Year Reunion ― September 24-25, 2010

Greetings Class of 2005!

I write to you from sunny Northern California where I am stationed as a dentist in the U.S. Air Force.  Living here has provided a nice break from the cold Minnesota winters, but with summer around the corner, I’m definitely getting a little homesick for the lakes.  While I don’t get to run into too many Gusties in my day-to-day life, I have enjoyed keeping up with as many of you as I can through these class letters and through the wonders of Facebook (I still blame you, Anne Michaletz Viljaste, for getting me addicted all those years ago!)

Speaking of Facebook, if you haven’t already, make sure you check out and join the “Gustavus Class of 2005” group.  Here you’ll find updates for our upcoming reunion and any get-togethers that we are having in the meantime.  Mark your calendars for our reunion weekend September 24-25, 2010 – we have a lot of terrific events planned, and it will be great to see as many of you as possible cheering on our Gustie football team!

A major part of the reunion planning involves leaving a legacy that the Class of 2005 can be proud of.  With this in mind, our class has set forth to establish an endowment scholarship to help an incoming student with their educational costs.  This is going to be quite the undertaking, and no other class has been able to do it by their five year mark, but with your help we can be the first!  More importantly, we’ll be helping a deserving student have the same fulfilling collegiate experience that we all enjoyed.  Donating has never been easier.  Go to https://gustavus.edu/give/2005 to set up a plan that works best for you, whether it’s one time donation or continuous automatic withdrawals.

Lastly, keep your updates coming.  These letters are a great way to keep up-to-date on all the exciting events in your lives!  Submit any updates to 2005classofficers@gustavus.edu.

Campus News

2010 Commencement

593 seniors became college graduates on Sunday, May 30 at 2 p.m.  Graduates received their diplomas from the faculty chair in their respective major, a tradition that began in 1973.  Also at the ceremony, Leila Brammer, associate professor of communications studies, was awarded the Edgar M. Carlson Award for Distinguished Teaching.  Mary Cunningham ’10 gave a fantastic senior student speech.

GLA Membership

All of us remember the Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library.  It was a place for study and, depending on your era, finding a “coffee date.”  But, in the 21st century, it has become much more.  It is a technology-rich laboratory for learning and a storehouse of culture and recorded knowledge.  It must constantly be strengthened to ensure excellence in education.  The Gustavus Library Associates (GLA) provides financial support for the library and a program of events to its members.  Join this year and immediately make a difference.  Whatever membership gift level you choose, 100% goes directly to the library’s acquisition budget.  Join today at www.gustavus.edu/GLA!!!

Health Insurance Available through Alumni Association

During this time of economic uncertainty, many of our alumni, new graduates, and their family members are in need of health insurance.  Short-term and permanent health insurance options are available through the alumni insurance program.  The program is typically promoted to new grads just before and after graduation, but in response to the rising unemployment rate and in an effort to help all of those in need, we’re spreading the word more broadly this year.  This is also perfect for children of alums who are graduating (even if they did not attend Gustavus Adolphus College) and aren’t yet covered under an employer’s health plan.  For more information, individuals can contact the alumni office or contact the program manager directly or 800-635-7801.

Former President Peterson Honored

James L. Peterson ’64, who served as the 15th president of Gustavus Adolphus College from 2003 to 2008, was awarded the Royal Order of the Polar Star at a special, private luncheon Thursday, April 29, on campus.  The honor was bestowed by the Swedish crown in appreciation and recognition of Dr. Peterson’s service to Gustavus and his continued work to foster relationships with individuals and organizations to strengthen ties with Sweden.

Summer in the Garden

A benefit for the Linnaeus Arboretum will be held on Sunday, June 27, from 4 to 7 p.m.  Enjoy a late afternoon in the spectacular setting of Linnaeus Arboretum while sampling wines, cheeses, coffees and desserts, music and other entertainment, a silent auction, tours, and more are planned.  This event is sponsored by the Friends of Linnaeus Arboretum.  Cost is $25 (Friends members receive a 10 percent discount and kids under 12 are free).  Tickets (non-refundable) are available via credit card at www.gustavustickets.com; if you do not have access to the Internet call Dana at 507-933-7520.  Tickets can also be purchased the day of the event.
