5-Year Reunion ― September 24-25, 2010

Dear Fellow Gusties,

I hope that this letter finds you well as we begin the busy holiday season.  It’s hard to believe that it has already been five years since we were, at this time of year, turning our minds toward finals, winter break and enjoying our last few months together on the hill.  It hardly seems possible that five years have gone by already, and yet, when I look at my friends and classmates, busy with spouses, babies, new homes, careers and this whole crazy being a real grownup thing, the carefree days of mid-afternoon naps, studying/socializing at the lib, trivia at Patrick’s, rocking it out at the Dive and midnight caf-traying in front of Old Main seem like eons ago.

In September, I joined several other members of our graduating class on the hill for fall volunteer leadership weekend.  It was during this time that we began planning the five-year reunion.  Right now, we’re looking at having an unofficial reunion in the Twin Cities in April to help with reconnecting and networking.  Our official reunion will take place over Homecoming weekend September 24-25, 2010.  Friday night, we will be in the Twin Cities, and then we will gather again on Saturday morning before the football game at Gustavus.

To make sure that you are kept abreast of all things related to the reunion and the Class of 2005, there are a couple of things you can do.  As mentioned in the previous letter, a Facebook group has been created in association with the reunion, search Gustavus Class of 2005 to find it.  If you have not already done so, please join the 287 of us that are already on and invite other class of 2005 Gusties to join.  Also, as we were going through the list of members of the class of 2005, we noted many errors in contact information, as well as classmates who were altogether missing from the list.  Please go online to the Gustavus Alumni webpage (www.gustavus.edu/alumni), log in and make sure that your contact information is correct.  Lastly, if you are interested in helping plan the reunion, please contact one of our class agents.  We’d love to have you join us.

Finally, in conjunction with our reunion, we have set up an endowed scholarship.  If we can reach our goal of raising $25,000, we would be the first class to ever do this at the five year reunion mark.  This scholarship will be used to give an incoming student the financial capability to attend Gustavus.  As a high school teacher, I know how short some of us may be on funds, and I know many of us are also strapped for cash because we’re still paying back our students loans.  But please remember, every little bit counts.  Enclosed you will find an Anniversary Class Giving card which has a spot to indicate you’d like to help with the endowed scholarship – just write in 2005 and it will go to the right spot!  You can also give online─ www.gustavus.edu/give/2005 and you will find a place to indicate your preference as well.  Participation is key─we can all do a little to help go a long way.

Health Insurance Available through Alumni Association

During this time of economic uncertainty, many of our alumni, new graduates, and their family members are in need of health insurance.  Short-term and permanent health insurance options are available through the alumni insurance program.  The program is typically promoted to new grads just before and after graduation, but in response to the rising unemployment rate and in an effort to help all of those in need, we’re spreading the word more broadly this year.  For more information, individuals can contact the alumni office or contact the program manager directly at 800-635-7801.

New “Make Your Life Count” Website and Facebook Page

Gustavus has created a new “Make Your Life Count” website that includes a variety of feature stories exemplifying the College’s new brand position launched last month.  The stories celebrate Gustavus students, alumni, faculty, staff, programs, events, and organizations.  The website may be accessed from the Gustavus homepage by clicking on the “Make Your Life Count” brandline (in the upper right hand corner) or by visiting makeyourlifecount.blog.gustavus.edu.  The “Make Your Life Count” stories are also posted on a new Facebook page.  Become a fan and share your own Gustavus story.  marketing@gustavus.edu.
