10-Year Reunion ― October 12 & 13, 2007

As the weather warms up remember the beautiful campus at Gustavus.  It was always interesting to watch the grounds go from barren winter wasteland to a blooming scenic picture in the spring.  I don’t know about you, but the grounds crew amazed me.  Who can grow a banana tree in Minnesota but the folks at Gustavus!  And the arb…there was a gem hidden in plain sight.  Whether you experienced it late at night, in the rain, or whenever―it was always a perfect backdrop.  It’s a good reminder that some of the Gustavus experience was atmosphere.  Being “secluded” on a Hill in St. Peter forced a certain bonding with classmates that we can only hope gets rekindled in October.  It also helped develop an ownership of the campus.  That big oak near Rundstrom, the Granlund sculpture “nook” by Uhler, the Shakespeare pit, and the ever present painted rock became “ours” when we used them.  When I remember my years at Gustavus I remember the campus as much as I remember the events and people.  Shannon Siefken used it as the setting to propose to me.  Kevin Vanderwerf Myers used the campus as settings for his various movies.  What memories does it bring back for you?

We hope you enjoy this month’s guest writer:

Hey everybody,

When I was asked to write the class newsletter for May, I thought about how at Gustavus I got out of writing numerous papers by producing videos instead.  It was way more fun, and helped prepare me for my career.

I’m currently the interim promotions manager for FOX 9, and do freelance video production (including the YouTube series “Intramural Glory”) as part of my company Humdinger TV.  So, I thought…why would I start writing papers now?  Why not just make another video?

I pulled out the vintage footage from my various productions at Gustavus and threw something together in anticipation of the upcoming reunion.  Hopefully, it will give you something to look forward to that weekend, beyond hearing Hootie and The Blowfish for the first time in eight years.

And, if you don’t know how to access that link, well…I hope you’re still enjoying life back in 1997.

Yours,

Kevin Myers

1997 Guest Letter Writer

P.S.  Does anybody know if Heyday is getting back together for Reunion Weekend?  I’ve got some Taxi Fare I wanna spend.

Reunion Update

In April the Reunion Committee met at the Clubhouse at Britt’s Pub to hone down some details.  Erin and Karla really appreciate having so many people volunteer to help.  Positive responses are coming in from everyone near and far!

Keep sending us your Gustie photos!  There are some good shots coming in for the video that will run on Friday night at Brit’s Pub.  Email jpg files to:  slsiefken@earthlink.net and hard copies or burned CDs (available for pick up Friday night) to:  Barbara & Shannon Siefken, 2603 Parkview Lane, Menomonie, WI  54751.

Class Giving Update

We are half way to our goal of funds raised ($13,793), and if you count the “multi-year pledges” we have only $10,543 more to meet our $30,000!  That’s why those three year pledges are so important.  If you pledge $100 for the next three years, it counts towards our 10-Year Reunion Anniversary Gift, but you only need to do it one year at a time.  (Plus, you’d get away from three years of Phonorama calls because you’d already be logged in as a donor!).  Whatever your motivation DO IT TODAY!

Lindau Symposium brings Richard John Neuhaus to campus

The Rev. Richard John Neuhaus, a well-known conservative Catholic intellectual, will address “Religion in American Public Life” at the inaugural Lindau Symposium at Gustavus on Tuesday, May 8, 2007, 7:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall.  A gift to the College from Phil ’58 and Nancy Lindau given prior to Phil’s death last April established the symposium at Gustavus that bears his name. Lindau, a commodities trader and executive who served Gustavus as a board member, campaign chair, and longtime volunteer leader, was passionate about the faith-life intersection and the church-relatedness of his alma mater. The symposium, which the Lindau family and College officials anticipate will be an annual event, aims to provide a forum in which diverse intellectual voices and mainstream beliefs and values can be brought together in a liberal arts environment.
