Class of '85
April 2007

Greetings Classmates!

Spring has sprung!  It seemed a little iffy there for a while, but as the old saying goes, if you don’t like the weather in Minnesota, just hang around for a bit and it will change.

As I write this, I’m waiting for my husband to pick me up so we can run a 5K at his alma mater, St. Cloud State.  I reached my goal of running a 5K on my 43rd birthday last summer.  I have finished five races and I have not been last in any of them.  It’s been pretty fun impressing my children with this feat although I consistently tell that my only competition is myself.  I also like to repeat "Keep on swimming" as I run like Dorie in Finding Nemo!

Actually, I think those are pretty good mantras for our class as well.  Yes, it would be great if our annual class gift exceeded all of the other classes of the 1980s, but my goal is to continue to connect our class with the college and encourage your on-going or renewed interest and support of Gustavus.  The Alumni Fund year ends on May 31st.  There is still time to make your gift.  I hope you will take the time today to send your gift to the college.  You can check out events happening on the campus on the website (gustavus.edu) and make your gift at the same time.

Lindau Symposium brings Richard John Neuhaus to campus

The Rev. Richard John Neuhaus, a well-known conservative Catholic intellectual, will address “Religion in American Public Life” at the inaugural Lindau Symposium at Gustavus on Tuesday, May 8, 2007, 7:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall.  A gift to the College from Phil ’58 and Nancy Lindau given prior to Phil’s death last April established the symposium at Gustavus that bears his name. Lindau, a commodities trader and executive who served Gustavus as a board member, campaign chair, and longtime volunteer leader, was passionate about the faith-life intersection and the church-relatedness of his alma mater. The symposium, which the Lindau family and College officials anticipate will be an annual event, aims to provide a forum in which diverse intellectual voices and mainstream beliefs and values can be brought together in a liberal arts environment.  The May 8 Lindau Symposium will be webcast (live video and audio) online at:
