Class of '80
September 2000

Greetings Gusties!

We know how busy life has become for everyone we hope, however, you can take some time out this fall to join us at our 20-Year Class Reunion! We look forward to seeing you either at the Sofitel in Bloomington on Friday night or on campus on Saturday.

Remember that your registration is due by September 22nd.

This can easily be done by using the website at:

gustavus.edu and following the alumni links until you come to the reunion registration form.

Keep In Touch

Can’t make it to the reunion, but still want to find out what’s going on at Gustavus?

Visit the Gustavus website and you can take a virtual tour of the campus, connect to real audio broadcasts of sporting events, and even read the current edition of the Gustavus Weekly.

Hall of Famers

Three members of our class have already been inducted into the Gustavus Athletic Hall of Fame. Brad Baker (football and baseball) and John Mattke (tennis) were both inducted in 1998. Jay Soule (baseball) was admitted in 1999. Later this fall, Jay Schoenebeck will take his place in the Hall of Fame.

Several of our classmates have remained or returned to campus since graduation. Bob Neuman is associate director of admissions, Laurie Dietrich is the planned gift administrator, Jay Schoenebeck is head football coach and Brian Johnson serves as the college chaplain. (We’ll count on Jay for a Gustavus victory over Concordia and Brian to use his contacts to arrange for good weather!)

Students on Campus

This may seem hard to believe, but…. four members of the Class of ’80 have sent their sons to Gustavus this fall. Liz (Rosenow) and Mark Heggem’s son, Joshua, Sharon (Moore) Kienow’s son, Tyler, and Kim (H,awkinson) Tarnowski’s son, Ben, are all freshmen. What a wonderful family legacy! Congratulations and best wishes to parents and students alike!

Fundraising Goals

Thanks to all of you for your gracious generosity! We are truly grateful for all of your gifts over the past twenty years. The Gustavus Fund drive has changed considerably. Students are now contacting alumni for pledges to the Gustavus Fund.

One objective that we would like your help with is the completion of the Ed and Patty Lindell Scholarship. You may remember that that fund was established at our graduation. We have collected several thousands dollars for this purpose, but we are still a bit short of having enough capital to generate a meaningful annual scholarship. If you are able, please designate your gift this year to the completion of this fund.

This is a legacy that our class can leave to future generations of Gusties It also honors two important leaders of the College. Thank you for your consideration!

Campus News

The 2000-2001 academic year opened with a record enrollment of 2,510 full-time students (compared with the previous record of 2,490 set last year), including 675 first-year students. When students arrived on campus in early September they were welcomed by the newly completed Carlson International Center/Swedish House, a new outdoor track/soccer field, and a newly completed Courtyard Café in the lower level of the Jackson Campus Center. This new café offers specialty coffees, bagels, pastries, and sandwiches, and opens to an outdoor eating area on the Johns Courtyard between the Jackson Campus Center and Lund Center.
