40-Year Reunion ― September 28, 2013

Hey, fellow Gusties from the Class of ’73

Hopefully by now, you have received a save the date card and have marked your calendar for the last Saturday in September to make a trip back to your old alma mater!  We know that we all have feelings about the College.  Some better than others maybe, but we think that no matter what, we all left Gustavus with something good—lifelong friends, fond memories of the one faculty member who finally made it clear, athletics, finding your soul mate or maybe just that special place on the Hill that was yours.  Now is the time for us to return!  When we look over those 40+ years, there has to be people that you would really like to find out about!  So please consider in earnest returning to Gustavus for our 40th class reunion!  Call somebody that you have not seen since we were at Gustavus and tell them that you plan to attend and would really like to see them to get caught up!  Phone numbers or emails are available from the alumni office 507-933-7511, 800-487-8437 or from us at 847-398-6749.

Your reunion committee, believe it or not, has actually met and we have slowly begun to plan!  So far we have booked The Dive from 10-3 on Saturday as a gathering place and lunch.  There will be campus tours and if you have not been at Gustavus since graduation or the tornado, you will be amazed and very proud.  Also there is the football game, an alumni chapel service and other activities that are scheduled for all classes.  Details to follow.  There will be a cocktail (cash bar) reception followed by dinner in one of the private dining rooms in the Jackson Campus Center that evening.  Matt Peterson has been in contact with some Profs who are still in the area to join us.  We hope to create an environment where there will be lots of time to explore our beautiful campus and yet have time to reconnect with friends and perhaps, even make a new one!  The reality is that we are not getting any younger and we have already lost classmates.  Now is the time, while we are still able, to make the trek whether it is just down Hwy. 169 or from across the country.  YOU are needed to make it a success.

The College is encouraging all classes to establish a class Endowed Scholarship.  Over 30 other classes have already done this including the class of 2010.  Did you know that in order to produce an endowed scholarship, which will continue to provide a scholarship infinitely, we need a base gift from our class of only $25,000?  Considering our previous giving, our class should be able to reach that level.  The Committee has agreed to this scholarship, as it is a great way to create a legacy for our class.  Many of us could never do this alone, so let’s do it together!  To help this along, today we (Gregg and Betsy) have sent a check for $2,500 as a starting point.  Even if the class doesn’t reach the $25,000 this year, dollars can continue to be added until the goal has been reached.  As a committee, we are hoping to aim high and go for $40,000 in honor of our 40th!  What do you think?  Are you willing to make a permanent scholarship that will help a future Gustie to better able afford Gustavus?  We are counting on you.

Speaking about giving (and we know that we are all being pulled in so many ways in these economic times), if we don’t give back to Gustavus, there may come a day when it just won’t be there for the next generation.  When our daughter, Sarah ’08, was in her senior year, the kids were given a calendar for their last 100 days.  There were all kinds of seminars on getting a job, learning about company benefits, interviewing skills, etc. but the one thing that caught our eye was:  6 weeks before they graduated - 42 days - they are asked to thank the alumni because their last 6 weeks were paid for by the alumni whether you were on a scholarship or paying full price!  We had no idea!  Also, did you know that Gustavus makes contributing easy?  You can provide them with a credit card or debit card and they will charge or debit whatever amount you want, monthly, quarterly or whatever.  We could all probably give up a Starbucks, or a fast food run every week or so and use that money to set up our class scholarship or give to the Annual Fund or maybe both!  You can also pledge to give a set amount of money, say $1000 over 4 years that can be paid on an annual/quarterly/monthly basis.  These wonderful gifts can be charged/debited or you could be sent a friendly reminder!  We know, lots to think about, but if we, as a class, could step up to the plate, no matter what you can afford to donate, it will all add up and benefit the place that helped to launch us all out into the world!

You should be hearing from us on a regular basis now, so we will plan an event that will make you want to return and remember the good times and reconnect with our classmates for a great reunion!  We are open to all ideas.  We will list the names, phone numbers and email addresses of the committee members at the end of this letter.  Please contact us and let us know what you think!  Most importantly, PLAN to COME and contact a classmate to encourage them to attend, too!  The more we have the better our day on campus will be.  Let’s make it happen!!

Go Gusties!!

On His Watch:  John S. Kendall at Gustavus

Dr. John Kendall ’49 served Gustavus as a faculty member for 23 years and as president for 10 years.  Rev. Dennis Johnson ’60, also a former president of Gustavus, wrote a book about the record of John Kendall as a professor and as a president.  As such, it is a study in leadership.   It is about a man who came up through the academic ranks to lead one of America’s best colleges.  It is about his preparation for that office and his hopes once he occupied it.  It is about passion, purpose, leadership and heart.  It is also about issues still at the core of higher education today.  You can purchase the book at the BookMark – gustavus.edu/bookmark.
