Class of ’70

October 2012

Greetings Gusties!

Linda has encouraged me to write about my Dad’s passing on June 1.  For those of you who knew him, you know how much he enjoyed our classmates, fraternity brothers, sorority sisters, and all of Gustavus Adolphus College.  I think one of my folks most cherished times was being invited to the Senior Beer Bust and feeling a part of that celebration.  Thanks to all who made them feel so welcomed.  For those of you who did not know my dad, he was a man of deep faith and the inspiration of mine.  I was blessed to have been able to be with mom and dad over the last few months before his passing.  It was an opportunity that not many have.  I am most grateful to my family, friends, and business associates who made that possible.

What a beautiful day it is and what a string of them we have had.  I seem to have a greater appreciation of what is surrounding us each and every day.  I wonder if that is something that comes with this process of adding days to our experience.  It is my hope for all of you who see this rambling that you too can find a time each and every day to be able to soak up some of the splendor that is there every day for each and all of us.

I am excited to let you all know that we are the Fifth Decade (1970 – 1979) winners of the Cec Eckhoff Award recognizing classes with the highest participation rate through May 31, 2012 for the Annual Fund drive.  We as a class had a total participation of 40%!  Congratulations to the class of 1970!  The overall winner was the class of 1962 with a 71% participation rate.  The bar is high, but we can work toward it I am sure.  Please consider being a part of this endeavor and if already participating, growing that most important gift.

I will again encourage you to send “news notes” to us via email or through the Gustavus web site so that we can keep in touch with each other and hear from people we may not have seen or heard from in years.  Seeing information about classmates is something to look forward to in the Quarterly and we can only get it from you or your designated communications people.  That said we still are looking for some folks who would be willing and able to join the class team and specifically a Communications Chair.  Please consider reconnecting with the class through this opportunity and let us know of your willingness.

Exciting things are happening at our Alma Mater and I would encourage all of you to stay tuned via the internet.  If you are not connected, perhaps some of your kids, grandkids, and soon great grandkids could keep you up to speed.  Though we were not able to attend all of the Nobel Conference, what we did have opportunity to attend was wonderful!  We bumped into Paul Thompson, Craig Nelson, and Sue Jones Turgeon there as well.  I highly recommend you giving the conference a try if you haven’t taken the opportunity.

Homecoming is another date that should be on your calendars as we can start looking forward to not only our anniversary years but the ones in between too.  Though I hesitate to get us too deep in to the season, think about Christmas in Christ Chapel as a wonderful way to usher in that time of year.  Enough said about that for now.  Suffice it to say there is always something happening on campus and elsewhere.  Please become involved.

I will close with the same paragraph I used last spring encouraging you all to help with recommendations for potential students, invite you to join the Gustavus Recruitment Network, consider options for off-year class get-together options, help with creation of a class web page or Facebook site, or help in any way you feel comfortable and/or moved.

We would love to hear from each and every one of you!

Thanks,

Scott and Linda (Gilkey) Lichty

1970 Class President and Annual Fund Chair
