Class of '68
Reunion dates ― October 3-4, 2008
We hope you all received the postcard to “Save the Date” for our 40th Class Reunion, October 3-4, 2008 and marked your calendars!
It was a good picture of our 1968 Class Officers: Ron Johnson, Connie Bohn Edwards, Mary Burgeson Haedt and Doug Scheunemann. How many of you still have the pin from our 25th Reunion?―“68 Gusties…Still Crazy After All These Years” Well, dig them out and bring yours along in October after all these years it’s still holding true for our 40th!
John, Paula and I are in the midst of planning a fun homecoming weekend. Friday night we will all get together at the Minneapolis Airport Marriott. Saturday morning will be breakfast at IKEA (right next door to the Marriott) we thought the Swedish connection makes lots of sense. After breakfast it’s off to Gustavus to see the campus, take a tour, take in the homecoming football game (in the new state of the art football stadium) or whatever. Somewhere in there we’ll rally for a “beer bust” prior to the afternoon festivities. Saturday night is still open; frankly we haven’t gotten there yet…got any ideas?
Our plan, which is horrendously optimistic, is to contact everyone in our class AND with that in mind we do need your help! Here are the names of the people that we’ve contacted so far and who have agreed to make about 10 phone calls to help us reach our goal: Karen Monson Peterson, Helene Nilsen, Cheryl Hamer Hauswirth, Carl Zaar, Kathy Eaton Asted, Barb Gray Wenchlag, Jerry Okerman and Dawn Nelson. Having to contact over 300 classmates it’s easy to see that we need more callers. Can we count on you to lend a hand? If so, please let us know! If we don’t hear from you, don’t be surprised if you hear from us! Also, joining the planning committee is Barb Veker Elnes and we appreciate her volunteering.
Some other “tidbits”…..
From time to time a group of Gusties gather at IKEA for breakfast and our last get together this summer Carl Zaar was in town and he joined us.
Another fun thing was when John and I were in Naples, FL this fall Fred Britzius had his picture in the Naples paper and we made contact. Fred has been in Naples for about three years and it was fun to reconnect. Fred still has family in Minnesota and we applied some friendly pressure for him to return to the “cities” next fall and be part of our 40th!
Barb Gray Wenschlag just had one of her hips replaced within the last several weeks with everything turning out fine. Now her challenge is to be ready for the 2008 golf season!
Naturally, there is much more to come regarding the “plan” for our 40th reunion. Over the next nine months we’ll be putting it all together and keeping you informed.
As the holiday season quickly approaches we wish you all the best this Christmas season and a very Happy New Year!

Forensics Team Continues Excellence
The Gustavus forensics team continues the tradition of excellence, with major team and individual wins this season. Last season the team ranked in the top 20, which is impressive since 14 of the top 20 schools are “Division I” schools that have more funding and more coaching staff. While many schools have several full-time forensics coaches, the Gustavus coach also is a full-time professor. So a unique aspect of the Gustavus program is the team meets weekly for peer coaching―a technique the team has found to be very successful.
