Class of ’67

January 2013

Dear 1967 Classmates:

New Year’s greetings to all of you!  I appreciate the confidence of class members who attended the last reunion asking me to serve as your class president.  I pledge that I will do the best job I can, but if anybody would like to succeed me in the future, please let me know!

Other than annual giving and attending Christmas concerts, I had become somewhat inactive in Gustavus activities.  That changed during our planning session during the 45th reunion.  I realized we had all experienced a very unique time in our Gustavus lives.  It was clear to me that though we all went separate ways with families and careers, we will always share our time together from 1963-1967.

Reunion events are a special time, but the weekend was so short that when we just started to enjoy the event it was time to go home.  I observed special moments of classmates continuing conversations that started forty-five years ago.  Examples include stories from Dave Spilseth, the special friendships of Karen, Kari, Jane, and Mim; and others…you know who you are!

With landmark events, such as 70th birthdays, 50th reunion planning, wouldn’t it be nice to think that we might be creative enough to make our own class meetings and events happen?  The internet is a great way to share ideas quickly.  I am thinking about possible classmate meetings in someone’s backyard, informal events at golf or tennis clubs, returning to campus for informal meetings perhaps tied to events like the Nobel conference.

Please share your thoughts on how we can enhance our connections.  Please feel free to email me your ideas at emer@bradcowisp.com.

Congratulations to all the members of our class who have financially supported Gustavus.  Our class is always towards the top in Decade Performance in both Total Percent Participation and in Total Dollars Given. Outstanding!!

I have a goal for our class this year to fully fund our 1967 Class Endowment Scholarship.  We are presently ten thousand dollars short of the $25,000 minimum that Gustavus needs to start scholarships for current students.  As you make plans for your 2013 annual Gustavus giving, please consider the Class Scholarship as well as the Campaign Gustavus, Annual Fund, Library Fund, etc.  If you make a gift, please write “1967 Scholarship” on your check memo line.

Finally, I want to thank our other class officers, Jeanne Mingus Tolzmann and Marcia Sylte Belisle for giving you up-to-date information in the class letters and The Quarterly.

Please do keep the information flowing!  May 2013 find all of you healthy and happy.

Regards,

Steve Emerson
