Class of ’54

April 2013

Dear Classmates,

Years ago there was a saying, “Spring has sprung the grass has riz…I wonder where the flower is”…well they are beginning to “smile” in Adrian…so hope it’s happening for you as well…  You’ve been in my thoughts…grateful for you and your love and gifts for Gustavus!  THANKS!!

We were “thrilled and proud to the gills” to enjoy the incredible Gustavus Symphony Orchestra April 5 in concert in our high school performing arts auditorium!  Wow!  What a beautiful concert and awesome Gusties and their director making it so!  The audience thoroughly appreciated the performance and we host families enjoyed the students so much.  Go Gusties…more and more!!!

On Friday, September 13, this year our 60th anniversary reunion planning team will be meeting on campus (1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.) to think, dream and decide together for that celebration on commencement weekend, May 30-31, 2014.  We so want your hopes and thoughts about our reunion to be shared with the reunion planners – so please contact folks on the planning team listed below so your input will be expressed:

Thanks to Lew Moon for this letter:

April 11, 2013

Dear College classmates,

With the next anniversary of our college graduation just a little over a year away, we need to begin to focus on what it will take to be at the Gustavus campus for this significant event.  It is hard to imagine that it has been sixty (60) years since we were students on that campus.  Both our 50th and the 55th reunions were great events.  The anniversary committee has already been at work on the plans for this class reunion.  We want this one to be the most memorable.

I had thought it might be good preparation to have small meetings of fellow classmates in the local geographical areas where we live.  Talking and planning together might inspire a good attendance.  In examining this prospect I find our class is scattered so far a wide that except for the twin cities area this might not work.  If you have classmates close enough to where you live, I would encourage a coffee meeting, lunch or a dinner together.  Discussions of the upcoming class reunion could result in some suggestions that would make our gathering even better.

Plan now to be in St. Peter, Minnesota on the new and expanded college campus on Commencement Weekend – May 30 & 31, 2014.

Lew Moon

Please spread the word about our 60th – what fun it will be to gather and celebrate!

Thanks to Roger for updating us (below) on our Class of 1954 Scholarship Fund honoring our classmate David Johnson.  What awesome leadership David has given Gustavus…for years!

The Class of 1954 Scholarship Fund goal is to achieve a total of $100,000 by the time of our 60th class reunion in May 2014.  As of April 18, 2013 we have gifts and pledges of $61,400.  Using an average gift size target of $400 from each class member would help greatly in achieving this goal.  Many have given already, which we greatly appreciate, but we still need everyone’s help and generosity.

To help put our scholarship in perspective; $100,000 will generate a financial scholarship of $4,000/year.  Think about helping prospective and incoming students achieving their goal of being a Gustie.  I can think of no finer gift.

Please give it some thought and then pledge your gift.  And remember; it’s deductible.

Roger Carlson

Scholarship Committee Chairman (or whatever my title is!!!)

P. S.  Enclosed is a pledge card for your convenience.

Text Box: We were about to send this letter when we received word that Janet Ruth Hanson Jones, age 80 of St. Peter died Monday, April 22, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family.  Janet was born in Alvarado (Marshall County), Minnesota on March 10, 1933.  When she was three years old, she moved with her family to Braham, MN where she attended Braham Public Schools graduating in 1950 as co-valedictorian.  She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree cum laude from Gustavus Adolphus College with a major in business administration in 1954.  Janet married Ellis J. Jones ʼ52, of Cambria, MN on June 20, 1954 at Braham Evangelical Lutheran Church.  They had two children:  Karen ʼ79 and David ʼ83.

As a person with perfect pitch, discovered when she was four years old, she had a lifelong interest in music, especially vocal, having sung in church, school and college choirs almost continually since 4th grade.  Janet enjoyed collecting recipes and cooking, playing word games, attending her grandchildren’s events, spending time at the family cabin in northern Minnesota, and watching her great granddaughters grow.

In these past few years she was an active member of our Reunion Planning Team helping us prepare our 60th Reunion.  She was always full of enthusiasm and insight and also a person full of joy and faith.  We thank the Lord for her special gifts that she shared.  She certainly will be missed.

So, dear classmates, let’s move forward together with joy, energy and appreciation for Gustavus as we “get ready” to CELEBRATE…we need your thoughts, hopes and energy!!  Thanks for what we can do together for our Alma Mater.

Helen Forsgren Hokenson and Woody Chaffee

1954 Co-Presidents

P. S.  Our Leadership Team sends you greetings, appreciation and happy thoughts.

Each sponsorship directly supports the Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library's (Library) acquisitions.  What an investment in resources for current and future students and faculty!

Last year’s Books in Bloom highlighted 30 different books/media and attracted over 500 people, some coming to campus for the very first time!  In 2013, Books in Bloom will be held May 3-5.  Contact Gustavus Marketing/Communications Office at 507/933-7550 with your commitment to sponsor, or partially sponsor, a bloom for 2013.  All designers and sponsors are invited to an opening reception from 5:30-7:30 on May 3.  Great wine and snacks!  Good company, too.
