55-Year Reunion ― May 29-30, 2009

Dear Classmates,

The elections are over, the holidays are behind us and before we become involved in income tax forms and the whereabouts of receipts to support our deductions, the time has come to plan for our 55th reunion at Gustavus.  The “big” plans of course, are being done by “the committee,” but now is the time for each of us to make our own personal plans.

  • Mark the last weekend in May on your calendar in ink.  (Find an alternate time to open the cabin or plant the garden.)
  • Call, write or email the folks you really want to see so that you get past the “I’ll go if you go” phase early on.
  • Arrange transportation early and take advantage of the college’s offer of free housing at the dorms.

The 800 pound gorilla in this plan and in our lives today seems to be the state of investments and pension funds.  Every time the “Governator” threatens to seize the California Teachers Retirement Fund to buy time before declaring bankruptcy my knees go weak.  Here we are, the children of the Great Depression facing the last decades of our lives with memory of the economic fears that confronted our parents in the thirties.

As we reassess our financial commitments and contributions I hope we will keep Gustavus on our lists.  Remember, “you belong to GA College and Gustavus belongs to you.”

Dear Classmates,

Dick Bublitz here.  In 55 years, 40 of them in California, I have only returned to Gustavus a couple of times and rarely communicated what was going on in my life.  However, I’m seriously considering getting back for the reunion on May 29-30.  I’ve made plans before though; only to have them detoured by other travel assignments.

My advertising/travel business still keeps me on the go throughout the U.S. and other parts of the globe.  I am on the board of directors of Travel and Tourism Marketing Association and Ventura County Fishing Club.  So, in addition to my business travel assignments, I try to fit in fishing trips and my other ‘hobby,’ running marathon events.

As a founders’ club member of the Pasadena Marathon, we were “smoked out” by the California wild fires in November but have been successful in rescheduling for March 22.

In addition to the May trip, I have been invited to cover the 2000th year, “Celebration of Hermann’s Victory” in New Ulm, September 17-19.  As my wife of 55 years, Rosemary, is from New Ulm, this editorial/photo assignment will be another reunion of sorts.

After 55 years, that’s a few snippets from this coast…and I look forward to planting my feet on the campus once again in May.

Here Is Another Opportunity!

We know how classmates love to hear from each other and enjoy reminiscing.  So in this reunion year we invite each of you to submit a brief (50-200 words) essay/remembrance/ reflection of your time after graduating from Gustavus.  Remembrances will be compiled and shared.  Ideas for writing include:

  • Is there someone you knew or something from your time at Gustavus that sustained you through time of failure or success?
  • What has been the greatest source of meaning or joy in your life?
  • For what are you grateful?
  • Was there a particular event or period of time that you regard with wonder and      awe?
  • Your thoughts or emotions fifty years after graduation?
  • Or, your remembrances and reflections as you choose to describe them.

Send your thoughts to:
