As with the previous article, "new" is defined in keeping with the editor's decision to mail out to alumni graduating in the past seventeen years.

Mathematician
Michael Hvidsten joined the department in September 1987.  He received a BA in mathematics from St. Olaf College in 1981 and his PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1985.  Before coming to Gustavus Mike spent two years at Michigan State University, where he held a research associate post-doctoral position. His research interests are in the area of differential geometry, computational geometry, and computer graphics.  Some of Mike's outside interests include gardening, woodworking, and playing soccer and tennis with his children.

Computer scientist
Max Hailperin joined the department in 1990.  He has a PhD from Stanford and an SB from MIT.  His primary professional interests are on the "systems" side of computer science: compilers, operating systems, etc.  In particular, his recent research has been on compiler optimizations; he published on "Cost-Optimal Code Motion" in 1998.  He is also interested in, and has published on, the public policy issues connected with the Internet, such as the conflict between protecting children and protecting free speech.  Although he hasn't found any free time recently, when he does, he uses it for handweaving.

Statistician
Carolyn Dobler joined the department in 1992.  She received her BA from Augustana College (Illinois) in 1976, and her PhD from the University of Iowa in 1989.  Before coming to
