Women's Nordic Skiing Finish 18th At NCAA Skiing Championships

Gustavus women's Nordic skier Laura Edlund turned in the highest finish by a Gustie at the NCAA Skiing Championships with a 18th-place finish in the 15K Classic race at Bohart Ranch in Bozeman, Mont. Kathleen DeWahl and Kelly Chaudoin turned in top 30 finishes at 27th and 29th, respectively. The performances by Edlund, DeWahl, and Chaudoin assured the Gusties at least an 18th-place finish in the team standings, which would be the highest finish by a Gustavus Nordic ski team.

Nordic skiers Laura Edlund, Kathleen DeWahl, and Kelly Chaudoin will participate in the 55th annual NCAA Collegiate Skiing Championships this week, March 5-8, at Bohart Ranch in Bozeman, Mont. These skiers earned the right to participate in the championships based on point totals earned in eight Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) races throughout the season.

The Gustavus women's Nordic ski team saved its best performance of the season with a second place finish at the Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) Regional Championships in Biwabik, Minn. on February 16-17. The Gusties earned 146 points for their highest finish ever at the regional championships. Northern Michigan captured the team title with 166 points, while the University of Alaska in Fairbanks compiled 130 points for third place.

Friedrich Named CCSA Women's Nordic Ski Coach of the Year

Jed Friedrich of Gustavus Adolphus College has been named the Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) Women's Nordic Ski Coach of the Year based on an unanimous vote by CCSA coaches. Friedrich, a fourth-year coach at Gustavus, is a St. Cloud, Minn., native who skied at Northern Michigan University where he graduated from in 2003.

The Gustavus Adolphus women's Nordic ski team defended its team title at the Minnesota Collegiate Championships on Saturday, while the men's team finished in second place. The duo of Laura Edlund (Sr., Forest Lake, Minn.) and Sarah Willis (Sr., Willmar, Minn.) won the women's race nearly two minutes ahead of the second place team. The tandem of Jens Brabbit (Fy., Winona, Minn.) and Kevin Patzoldt (Sr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) took second in the men's field.

Gustavus Adolphus women's Nordic skiers Laura Edlund (Sr., Forest Lake, Minn.) and Kathleen DeWahl (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) have been named to the All-Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) Second Team. Both athletes were selected to the five-member team based on their performances in CCSA Nordic ski competitions this season.

The Gustavus women's Nordic ski team turned in its second consecutive third-place finish with 157 points at the NCAA Nordic Ski Qualifier in Cable, Wis. on January 26-27. The Gusties finished 33 points behind first-place Northern Michigan University (NMU), which turned in 190 points. Three female Gustavus skiers turned in top 10 performances in the 5K freestyle and 10K classic races to solidify positions in the NCAA qualifying standings.

The Gustavus women's nordic ski team turned in its most impressive performance of the season as three skiers finished in the top 20 of each race at the Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) Qualifier held in Marquette, Mich. on January 19-20. The Gusties posted 139 points in the 5K freestyle and 10K classic races behind first place Northern Michigan University with 171 points.
