Dorer, Wittwer, Ziegler Named NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Winners

Gustavus Adolphus College student athletes Margaret Dorer, Trevor Wittwer, and Connor Ziegler have been selected to receive postgraduate scholarships from the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Dorer (ice hockey), Wittwer (basketball), and Ziegler (swimming) are among a group of 58 student athletes that compete in a winter sport in NCAA Divisions I, II, and III to receive a $7,500 postgraduate scholarship.

Stefanie Ubl Named To AHCA All-America Team

Gustavus Adolphus College senior forward Stefanie Ubl (Blaine, Minn.) was recognized by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) as 2008 RBK Hockey Division III Women's All-Americans at a banquet held Thursday evening in conjunction with this weekend's NCAA Division III Women's Hockey Championships in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

No. 6 UW-Superior upended No. 2 Gustavus Adolphus 3-1 in a NCAA Quarterfinal game on Saturday afternoon at Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter, Minn. Shana Katz scored the eventual game-winning goal at 14:36 in the second period, while Melissa Kunzelman made 28 saves for the Yellowjackets. UW-Superior, which is on a 15-game winning streak, improved to 23-4-1, as Gustavus finishes its season 25-3-0 for the second consecutive season.

Gustavus and UW-Superior Face Off In NCAA Women's Hockey First-Round

The Gustavus Adolphus College and the University of Wisconsin at Superior women's hockey teams will face off in the first round of the NCAA Women's Hockey Tournament on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter, Minn. The second-ranked Golden Gusties enter the contest at 25-2-0, while the sixth-ranked Yellowjackets come in at 22-4-1 overall. Doyle Named MIAC Women's Hockey Player of the Week

Gustavus Adolphus College senior forward Molly Doyle (Richfield, Minn.) has been named the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Hockey Player of the Week for the week ending March 9, 2008. Doyle scored the game-winning goal at 17:14 in the third period to give Gustavus a 1-0 victory over St. Thomas in the MIAC Playoff Championship game on Wednesday night in St. Peter.

Women's Hockey Faces UW-Superior In First Round Of NCAA Tournament

The Gustavus women's hockey team received word on Monday that it would host a first round contest in the 2007-08 NCAA Division III National Tournament. Coach Mike Carroll's squad, which has compiled a record of 25-2-0, received an automatic bid in the tournament after winning the MIAC Playoff Championship game last Wednesday. The Gusties will host the University of Wisconsin in Superior on Saturday, March 15 at 2 p.m.

Gustavus senior forward Molly Doyle deflected a hard shot by teammate Kelsey Johnson past St. Thomas goaltender Lauren Bradel with 2:46 remaining in the third period to give the Gusties a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Tommies in the MIAC Playoff Championship game on Wednesday night at Gustavus. The Gusties, who improve to 25-2-0 on the season, receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament as a result of claiming the playoff championship.

The Gustavus Adolphus women's hockey team will meet the University of St. Thomas in the MIAC Playoff Championship game Wednesday night at Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter at 7 p.m. This will be the sixth consecutive meeting in the championship between the squads with the Gusties winning the last four title games. The Gustavus women's hockey team earned a spot in its ninth consecutive MIAC Championship game with a 5-0 win over Hamline at Don Roberts Ice Rink on Saturday afternoon. The Gusties jumped out to a three-goal lead in the first period and never looked back to earn their fifth shutout in seven games. Gustavus improved to 24-2-0, while Hamline finished its season at 14-10-3 after falling to the Gusties in the MIAC Semifinal for the second straight season.

Four Gustavus Adolphus women's hockey players have been named All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference by a vote of the league's coaches. Seniors Stefanie Ubl (Blaine, Minn.) and Molly Doyle (Eagan, Minn.) were recognized, as was junior Mari Gunderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) and first-year Kirstin Peterson (St. Paul, Minn./Hill-Murray). Ubl was also named MIAC Player of the Year.
