Dorer, Wittwer, Ziegler Named NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Winners

Gustavus Adolphus College student athletes Margaret Dorer, Trevor Wittwer, and Connor Ziegler have been selected to receive postgraduate scholarships from the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Dorer (ice hockey), Wittwer (basketball), and Ziegler (swimming) are among a group of 58 student athletes that compete in a winter sport in NCAA Divisions I, II, and III to receive a $7,500 postgraduate scholarship.

The Gustavus men's basketball team battled valiantly but came up just short in a 76-73 loss to St. Thomas in the MIAC Playoff Championship game played at Schoenecker Arena on the St. Thomas campus. The Gusties finish the season with an overall record of 19-8.

The Gustavus men's basketball team will face the University of St. Thomas in the MIAC Playoff Championship game on Saturday evening at St. Thomas at 7:30 pm. The Gustavus men's basketball team claimed a thrilling 71-70 overtime win against Carleton in a MIAC Playoff Semifinal game at Gus Young Court in St. Peter on Thursday night. The Gusties rallied from six points down with :14 seconds left in regulation play to tie the score and send the game into overtime. Two free throws by the Gusties Andrew Doble with 1:19 left in the overtime proved to be the difference as Gustavus extended its season by claiming the 71-70 post-season victory.

Trevor Wittwer, Jess Vadnais Named Finalists for Jostens Division III Men's and Women's Basketball Player of the Year Award

Gustavus men's basketball player Trevor Wittwer and women's basketball player Jess Vadnais have both been named finalists for the Josten's Division III Player of the Year Award. The announcement was made by the Salem, Virginia Rotary Club which presents the prestigious awards each year. Ten finalists are selected for both the men and the women and the winner is announced at the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Final Four in Salem, Virginia on Thursday, March 20.

Gustavus men's basketball player Trevor Wittwer, a senior from Redwood Falls, Minnesota, has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-America Team. Wittwer, a Health Fitness major with a 3.89 grade point average, was a Third Team selection in the College Division.

The Gustavus men's basketball team was unable to hit the key shots down the stretch, while Zach Johnson knocked down several key shots for Carleton as the Knights slipped past the Gusties 74-66 on Gus Young Court in St. Peter, Minn. Andrew Doble led Gustavus with 12 points. Gustavus finished the regular season at 18-7 overall and 14-6 in the MIAC.

The Gustavus men's basketball team used a 10-0 run early in the second half to build a 14-point lead and then closed the door with a 19-3 run over the final five minutes on its way to a 87-58 win over Hamline on Wednesday night in St. Peter. The victory assured the Gusties of a second place league finish with one game remaining in the regular season. Coach Mark Hanson's squad is now 18-6 overall and 14-5 in the conference play.

Trevor Wittwer's Jumper With :07 Left Lifts Men's Basketball Over Concordia 51-50

Senior captain Trevor Wittwer made a 15-foot turnaround jumper under heavy defensive pressure with :07 left in regulation play to help Gustavus claim an improbable 51-50 win over Concordia on Monday night in St. Peter. The Gusties who trailed 35-25 at halftime, limited the Cobbers to 15 points in the second half. Kane Sivesind and Jesse Van Sickle each scored 10 points to lead Gustavus.

Men's Basketball Falls To St. Thomas 76-68

The Gustavus men's basketball team made a furious rally in the second half cutting an 18 point lead to two points with four minutes left, however the Tommies made four clutch free throws in the final :30 seconds to hold on for the 76-68 victory. The Gusties needed a win to pull even with the Tommies atop the MIAC standings, however with the loss, Gustavus is now two-and-a-half games back with four games left to play. Andrew Doble led the Gusties with 23 points.

The Gustavus men's basketball team will battle St. Thomas on Saturday with first place in the MIAC at stake. The Gusties enter with a record of 16-4 overall and 12-2 in the MIAC, while the Tommies enter with a mark of 18-3 overall and 14-2 in the MIAC.
