Fall exhibitions on view at the Hillstrom Museum of Art September 14-November 8, 2009 include:

Winds of Inspiration, Winds of Change
Explores wind turbines, considering them aesthetically and thematically, as environmentally sensitive objects and as objects with a powerful, sublime presence. This invitational exhibition features works by faculty artists from colleges and universities across the state and local artists from St. Peter and Mankato. The exhibition is presented with assistance from the Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency.

Public lecture in conjunction with Winds of Inspiration, Winds of Change: "The Windmill: Its Varied Functions and Symbolic Associations in Dutch Art"
Arthur K. Wheelock, Curator of Northern Baroque Art at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., will consider the proliferation of images of windmills (a precursor to the wind turbine) in Dutch art of the 17th century, allowing comparisons to be drawn with contemporary wind turbine artworks that are becoming more prevalent today as wind power is embraced as an important part of the solution to the global energy and climate crises. Wallenberg Auditorium, Nobel Hall of Science, Sunday, November 1, 2009, 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Cuadros from Pamplona Alta: Textile Pictures by Women of Peru
Features textile pictures ("cuadros") sewn by groups of women and depicting their lives in a shantytown outside of Lima, Pamplona Alta, where conditions have been mostly very poor, due to economic hardship and political instability. Sales of cuadros not included in the exhibition help support the artists by supplementing the meager incomes they are able to earn in Peru.

FOCUS IN/ON: Birger Sandzén's Dry Creek Bed, Kansas
The 1912 painting by Swedish-American artist will be considered in another of the Museum's FOCUS IN/ON projects, in which a single work from the Hillstrom Collection is analyzed in depth in collaboration with a colleague from across the curriculum. An essay co-written with James Welsh, Chair of the Department of Geology, will consider the artist and his career, and the geology of western Kansas, where the painting was made, including the important Ogalalla Aquifer. This project is presented in conjunction with the 2009 Nobel Conference on water resources.

Also presented in conjunction with this FOCUS IN/ON project and the Nobel Conference will be a dance performance choreographed by Michele Rusinko of the Department of Theatre and Dance, titled Dry Spells and presented twice during the Nobel reception, October 6, at 6:15 and 6:45 p.m.

This 2nd Annual Retreat focuses on the mentoring of male Gustavus students toward masculinities that are different from the versions they typically encounter in the media. The sophomores who attend this retreat will have the opportunity to learn from upperclassmen on their experiences as Gustavus leaders, as well as from advisors on their experiences with male leadership and the image of a male. These sophomores will help to create an informed, motivated, and equipped body of male campus leaders. Through activities ranging from wood-working to cooking, we will explore all sides of what it really means to be a man.

What is the Gustie Cup?

Gustie Cup is a new initiative sponsored by Campus Activities Board. The Gustie Cup is a year long team athletic competition open to all students and/or organizations. The events you can expect to see this year include tournaments of these sports: Volleyball, Basketball, Broomball, Soccer, Bowling, and Ultimate Frisbee. Teams will have the chance to win up to $1000 for their team. Remember, this isn't just for organizations, everyone is welcome to participate.

How does the Gustie Cup work?

Teams compete in monthly tournaments. The winners of each tournament are awarded a prize worth $100 in value, along with a point system that carries through the the whole year. Which ever team accumulated the most points by the end of the year receives a prize worth $300. Teams are welcome to come to one or all events, and can participate even if you miss the first tournament. In order to participate your team must register at the Red Desk in Lund or at the Information Desk in the Campus Center.

How can I get more information?

On Nov. 11, 2009 - There will be an informational meeting in Lund 207 at 7:00 p.m. - Free Buffalo Wild Wings will be provided. If you missed this meeting, you are encouraged to send your questions to Adam Zard, CAB Recreation Executive.

What is the first event?

The first event will be a Volleyball tournament on Nov. 14, 2009. The events starts at 3:00 p.m. in the Lund Center. Free Erbert & Gerberts will be given away. Did you know that U.S. Citizens now need to have a passport to travel to Canada and Mexico?

From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Nov. 17, 2009, representatives from the Nicollet County Recorders' Office (http://www.co.nicollet.mn.us/) will be accepting and processing passport applications (new and renewals). Faculty, staff and students are welcome to stop by and use their services. They will be set-up next door to the study abroad fair in the St. Peter Room. The County Recorders' office will be equipped to take passport photos at the fair (2 for $12.00) or you can get your passport photos done in Olin Hall Room 032 (2 for $5.00) beforehand and bring them with you.

A Royal Affair is a biennial fundraiser supporting the College's Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library. More than 1,000 guests are expected to attend this gala dinner/auction benefit at the Minneapolis Convention Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Started in 1978, this tradition of Gustavus Library Associates (GLA) features live music, silent and live auctions, and a formal dinner. As a fundraiser, social gathering, and a celebration of the Folke Bernadotte Library, A Royal Affair continues to play an essential role in the growth of the library itself, as well as in the preservation of the library as a celebrated part of the Gustavus community.

What is the Gustie Cup?

Gustie Cup is a new initiative sponsored by Campus Activities Board. The Gustie Cup is a year long team athletic competition open to all students and/or organizations. The events you can expect to see this year include tournaments of these sports: Volleyball, Basketball, Broomball, Soccer, Bowling, and Ultimate Frisbee. Teams will have the chance to win up to $1000 for their team. (Remember, this isn't just for organizations, everyone is welcome to participate)

How does the Gustie Cup work?

Teams compete in monthly tournaments. The winners of each tournament are awarded a prize worth $100 in value, along with a point system that carries through the the whole year. Which ever team accumulated the most points by the end of the year receives a prize worth $300. Teams are welcome to come to one or all events, and can participate even if you miss the first tournament. In order to participate your team must register at the Red Desk in Lund or at the Information Desk in the Campus Center.

How can I get more information?

On Nov. 11, 2009 - There will be an informational meeting in Lund 207 at 7:00 p.m. - Free Buffalo Wild Wings will be provided. If you missed this meeting, you are encouraged to send your questions to Adam Zard, CAB Recreation Executive.

What is the first event?

The first event will be a Volleyball tournament on Nov. 14, 2009. The events starts at 3:00 p.m. in the Lund Center. Free Erbert & Gerberts will be given away. Prize worth $100 awarded to the winning team. To join the tournament, register at the Information Desk in the Campus Center, or at the Red Desk in Lund. Remember, this competition is open to everyone.
