Summer Servant-Leadership Program

Summer Servant-Leadership Program

The Center for Vocational Reflection invites all current Gustavus students who will be returning to campus for the entire 2005-2006 school year, to apply for participation in our annual Summer Servant-Leadership Program.  The program is open to students who will spend the summer of 2005 working with a camp; a non-profit human service agency; an organization that deals with issues of peace, social justice, community building, environmental education and stewardship; and the like.  The several components of this rigorous, high-commitment program – including a $1500 stipend and a year of follow-up reflection and leadership development opportunities – are intended to encourage students to spend their summer working and growing as servant-leaders, and to support them in exploring potential “callings” to a lifetime of leadership and service.

Participants will be selected on the basis of an application, two recommendations, and an interview (which will be conducted in late April or early May).  Applicants who have participated in the program before are eligible to apply, although priority for acceptance may be given to those who have not yet participated. A limited number of returning servant leaders will be invited to serve in a new capacity as peer mentors / small-group leaders, who will help to shape the program’s culture of high expectations and powerful growth.  In addition to taking on added leadership responsibilities within the program these student leaders will also have opportunities for additional training and development, including participation in a national conference.  If you are interested in returning to the program as a peer mentor, please be sure to fill out the appropriate sections of the application.

Since the primary aim of the program is to develop servant-leaders by nurturing substantive reflection on issues of vocation and lives of service, participants are asked to make a significant, sincere, and enthusiastic commitment to participating in all its aspects during the next school year, including:

  • an opening “pre-flection” grill-out picnic and commissioning celebration on Sunday, May 8, 2005
  • regular small-group activities throughout the year (including, for example, discussion of common readings and a group-designed service project)
  • a welcome-back celebration during the first week of class, and an overnight retreat September 17-18
  • a series of four, 3-hour Servant-Leadership Development Workshops, across fall and spring semesters
  • a celebration dinner in December
  • a half-day Leadership Integration retreat in May 2006

Please contact either Chris or Amy in the CVR with questions, or to pick up application materials.

Blessings to you in your explorations, discernment, and service!

Did You Know?

The Dive is in a space that used to be occupied by the old Union swimming pool, a handball court, and locker rooms before the Union was remodeled in 1985, hence the name. On Friday and Saturday nights the Dive takes on a dance-club atmosphere and has also been used for talent shows, coffeehouse performances, comedians, improvisation, bands, and other activities. Its central location makes it one of the chief meeting places on campus.
