Substance Free Living Housing Selection Process

Return to Housing Selection main page

Gustavus students may choose to participate in The PLEDGE Program, a substance-free living environment and program.  Students choosing to reside in substance free living areas agree to refrain from any and all possession or use of tobacco, alcoholic beverages and other controlled substances and illicit drugs. It is expected that these areas will be free from potential and residual effects of use and/or possession occurring in other locations. This means that students choosing to reside in these areas agree to forego any and all use of these substances in their lives. Students failing to abide by the agreement will be administratively reassigned to another available space on campus.

Substance-free living areas include Prairie View Hall and Gibbs Hall (2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors) for upper-class students, as well as Norelius Hall sections 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A and 1C for first year students. This means there are 44 spaces for upperclass men and 72 for upper women in Prairie View and Gibbs.

Rooms available in Prairie View and Gibbs Hall are listed below. NOTE: PLEDGE clusters are listed together. A cluster is a pair of 2-person rooms linked within the housing selection system. In order to obtain a cluster you must apply as a group of four.

Housing Selection Web-based Process

Step by step instructions

  • Step One: The Online Housing Contract and Preference form will be available the first day of Spring semester.
  • Step Two: Complete the Housing Contract and Preference Form. You MUST submit it by February 18 to participate in the Housing Selection Process. Failure to complete and submit a completed form will bar you from participating.
  • Step Three: Go to the "Housing Profile" page to double check the information that DATATEL has for you.  If you believe it is incorrect, please come to the Residential Life Office during walk-in hours to discuss this with Troy or Charlie. It is your responsiblity to validate your "Housing Profile " and come to Residential Life if you believe there are errors.
  • Step Four: Go to the Important Dates Page.  This page identifies the RANGE OF DAYS to apply for specific types of housing.
  • Step Five: During the RANGE OF DAYS - remember, this is not a first-come, first served based process - one member of your group must go the website to enter your group's preferences.  Failure to enter your group's preferemces during the designated RANGE OF DAYS will result in you NOT participating in that particular process. No extensions will be given. The screens explain the process steps. You will need the following information to complete the process:
    • Your Web-advisor user name and password.
    • ID numbers for each member of your group.
    • Listing of individual units in which you would like to live. You are asked to rank order 12 of these.
    • Listing of building in which you would prefer to live in the event you do not receive any of your individual units.
  • Step Six: 5-7 days after the closing of the web-site following the RANGE OF DAYS each group member will receive an e-mail indicating the room to which you were assigned.
