Priority Numbers Explained

Read thoroughly all information in this website.

Priority numbers are randomly created by a computer and assigned by each student's ADJUSTED YEAR IN RESIDENCE (AYIR). Therefore, your Year in Credit is not utilized in this process at all. The Adjusted Year in Residence is based on the year you began as a full-time student at Gustavus following graduation from high school. FOR EXAMPLE: A student that has attended Gustavus since graduating from High School in 2005 would have an AYIR of 2. For the purpose of the Housing Selection Process, higher priority numbers are better than lower. Each student receives a unique random number. However, it is possible for two students to have the same number due to the adjustment made due to alcohol violations. (See below).

Transfer student numbers may be adjusted so their YEAR IN RESIDENCE would match the class with which they should graduate. FOR EXAMPLE: a student that attended and lived on campus at International University after graduating from high school in 2004 before transferring to Gustavus for fall 2005 would have an AYIR of 3. However, a student that spent the 2004-2005 academic year in Junior Hockey before starting at Gustavus in Fall 2005 would have an AYIR of 2. The process of adjusting the "Year in Residnece" occurs BEFORE priority numbers are created.  Therefore, the number generated will be the number with which you will go through the housing selection process.

Priority Numbers for students with Post Secondary Education Option (PSEO) credits are NOT adjusted in this process.

The ranges of numbers for the Housing Process will be:

  • 1000-1750 Students with a AYIR of 1
  • 2000-2750 Students with a AYIR of 2
  • 3000-3750 Students with a AYIR of 3

The computer generated, random priority number system is the most fair system developed for use in the Housing Selection Process. Please remember that some students will have high priority numbers while others will receive lower ones. Therefore, it is important that all students have a couple of housing options in mind. Finally, history has demonstated that some students are placed into buildings in which they would prefer not to live due to their low priority number.

While a priority number is created for current students with an AYIR of 4, it is necessary for those students with an AYIR of 4 planning to return for another semester or year to come into the Residential Life Office to inform us of your return. If a decision is made later to not return to the campus, this student's group will lose the housing selected and be placed elsewhere.

Students with permission to reside OFF-CAMPUS for the 2007-8 are automatically granted that permission again UNLESS they desire to go through the housing selection process to request on-campus housing. These students must come into the Residential Life Office to both refuse their off-campus permission AND to request on-campus housing. REMEMBER, if you request to participate in the housing selection process, you are relinquishing your permission to reside off-campus and MUST live on campus for 2008-2009 academic year.

Housing number reduction for alcohol violations. Students involved in an alcohol violation that resulted in a "Decrease in Housing Priority Number" sanction will be penalized by having their housing priority number reduced to one less that the lowest possible number for their class (Year in Residence) year. For example, a current first-year student, whose number could be between 1000 and 1750, would have their number reduced to 999. If a student has more than one of these violations, the priority number will be reduced an additional 500 points per violation. The reduction in Housing Priority number only applies to students who have been found responsible for a relatively severe violation of the College alcohol policies.
