Permission Selection Process

Return to Housing Selection maing page

Gustavus Adolphus College is a residential college. It recognizes that a significant part of a student's learning experience is gained outside the classroom and that the residence hall environment is a key developmental tool in this process. As a residential college, Gustavus is committed to residence hall living as a vital complement to its academic program.
As such, all students are expected to live in college-owned residences all four years. In recent years, the number of students has been greater than the on-campus capacity. Therefore, a select number of juniors and seniors are granted permission to reside off-campus

There are three types of permission to reside off-campus.

  1. Students who wish to be granted permission to reside off-campus for the 2008-2009 academic year must go through the Housing Selection Process for Off-Campus permission.

The RANGE OF DAYS TO ENTER YOUR INDIVIDUAL/GROUP INFORMATION FOR THIS PROCESS IS FEBRUARY 19-21. Groups can be from one to eight students however groups MAY NOT be of mixed gender.

Only those students with current Year in Residence status of 2, 3, or 4 may apply to reside off-campus. A limited number of students are granted off-campus permission, a total of approximately 450 for the 2008-2009 academic year. This number includes those students who currently have permission to reside off-campus and retain that permission for the 2008-2009 academic year. A specific number of the total spaces are held for men and women during this process. The percentage of spaces held for each sex reflects the total gender distribution for the campus. See Step By Step Process Overview for how the on-line process itself works.

  2. Students granted permission to reside off-campus for the current academic year (2007-2008) are automatically granted permission to reside off-campus for next academic year AND are expected to reside off-campus for the 2008-2009 academic year unless they request to return to on-campus living. If a current off-campus student wishes to go through the housing selection process, s/he will need come to the Residential Life Office to request to participate in the Housing Selection Process. Remember, though, that if a student requests a housing priority number, they automatically forfeit the guaranteed Off-Campus permission for 2008-2009 AND must reside in on-campus housing. Please come to the Residential Life Office between 8:00AM, Monday, February 11, and noon on Friday, February 15 to make the request.

  3. EXEMPTIONS: If a student falls into one of these categories, they may receive an exemption to the on-campus living requirement. The exemption permits this student only to reside off-campus within the confines of the exemption. Exemptions are permitted for living at home with parents in the city of St. Peter or within 15 miles of Gustavus, living with dependent children, being married, owning a home within 15 miles of Gustavus, or being a veteran of military service. Students involking an exemption must come to the Residential Life Office prior to February 15 to make final arrangements.

NOTE: Students granted permission to reside off-campus for the current academic year (2007-2008) MUST COMPLETE AN ON-LINE HOUSING CONTRACT.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Students granted permission to reside off-campus MAY have their Financial Assistant reduced. Please contact the Student Financial Assistance Office for further information.

Remember, students WHO HAVE NOT SUBMITTED A HOUSING CONTRACT AND PREFERENCE FORM WILL NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE HOUSING SELECTION WEBSITE.

ALSO, Once a group has selected off-campus housing through the housing process, that group must continue to operate as one unit. If a member leaves the group for any reason OTHER THAN becoming a CF or studying abroad, the remaining group members will be reassigned into on-campus accommodations and the off-campus permission given to the next group through the wait list process.
