The Intentional Learning and Service Houses/Suites (ILS Houses/Suites) are designed to provide students with the opportunity to create a community around a specific interest or theme that makes a direct contribution to the Gustavus community. Students residing in the ILS Houses/Suites regularly provide the campus community with programs and activities surrounding the chosen interest or theme. The themes in these houses/suites may change annually, depending upon students' interests. This theme-styled living allows sophomore, junior or senior residents the ability to live in a small community with others sharing a common interest. Some of the themes have included FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes; providing bible study and weekend substance-free activities), Theatre House (providing open forums for poetry, play readings, and acting), and Gustavus Greens (providing an environmentally friendly lifestyle).
Intentional Learning and Service Houses/Suites are assigned annually on the basis of the application submitted to the Residential Life Office. The Residential Life Office, with recommendations from the ILS selection committee, will make assignment decisions based upon the relative strength of the applications. The following application information is provided to assist groups wishing to apply for an Intentional Learning and Service House/Suite.

ILS Social & Room Selection, 8:30 pm - 10:00 pm in Linner Room We read your application files to determine your skills, learn your interests, and to understand, on some small scale, your background. With this in mind, the Social and Room Selection event is a time for all who have been accepted to the program to begin the process of connecting as a community. We will begin to get to know each other, assign committees, connect potential roommates and, and select rooms.. |
Note that a surcharge (approximately $1,200--for the year) will be added to each house occupant's room bill. The surcharge is necessary to offset the added costs of maintenance and housekeeping, which the Physical Plant sustains, and reflects the additional square footage and the availability of a kitchen. Additionally, because full kitchen facilities are available in each of the Intentional Learning and Service Houses, occupants have the choice of opting out of a meal plan.
The college-owned houses and apartments are considered campus housing. Group members should not apply for off-campus approval.
Groups currently assigned to ILS Houses, Wellness, & Social Justice are not guaranteed an assignment for next year. They need to submit new applications each year. The success of the current hous/suite is a factor in reassignment and should be addressed in the proposal.
Gender ILS Houses may be either same sex environments or co-educational environments. Students are required to maintain single sex bedrooms within the Houses. All bedrooms and bathrooms in the ILS Houses are lockable. All apartments(Lundgren House apartments)/suite style living remain same sex environments.
House/Suite Leaders House Leaders will be responsible for communicating information sent from the Residential Life Office, taking leadership in mediating group differences, meeting monthly with the Residential Life Office individually and as a member of the ILS House Leaders meeting, and be accountable for the groups planned activities and programs.
ILS House & Residence Hall Policies All rules and regulations affecting the residence halls apply to ILS Houses as well. In confirming his or her intention to reside in an ILS House, each student agrees to abide by all current rules and policies, and any, which may be added for the safety and convenience of the community, or to aid in the administration of housing.
"Students who are assigned to campus apartments/suite or houses should be aware that violations of residential life policies may lead to loss of privileged housing (i.e., relocation to a supervised residence hall space, eviction, and/or restriction of entry) in addition to other sanctions that might be imposed by a hearing panel."
